Roger Daltrey, the legendary frontman of The Who, is facing a harsh reality: his declining health could cut short what’s expected to be the band’s final tour. At 81 years old, Daltrey is nervous about making it through the upcoming North American dates starting August 16 in Florida.

The rock icon is battling the long-term effects of a near-fatal meningitis infection from nine years ago, which left him struggling to regulate his body temperature. Performing in the summer heat — often above 75 degrees — leaves him drenched in sweat and drained of essential salts, making each show a physical challenge.

“There’s a big part of me that’s going — I just hope I make it through,” Daltrey confessed. Though his voice remains strong and loud, he admits the toll of singing night after night is “gruelling.” Back in the heyday, he would perform three-hour sets six nights a week, pushing harder than most athletes.

Behind the scenes, those close to Daltrey say his health is a growing concern. “Everyone can see how much this is costing him,” a longtime associate revealed. “There’s a feeling this might really be the last time we see him do this at all.”

The Who, including guitarist Pete Townshend, 79, plan to wrap their U.S. and Canada tour on September 28 with a show in Las Vegas. While Daltrey says he’s unsure if he’ll ever perform live again, he’s staying positive. “My voice is still as good as ever. I’m still singing in the same keys, and it’s still bloody loud,” he said.

Friends close to the rock star add that even if The Who offer one-off concerts down the road, Daltrey is unlikely to take them on unless he’s certain it won’t risk his health. “He’s terrified of collapsing on stage or having to cancel last minute. That’s not the way he wants to go out,” one insider shared.

As this iconic chapter nears its end, fans everywhere are holding their breath, hoping to savor every last note from one of rock’s greatest voices.
