A devastating explosion at a fireworks factory in China has left dozens dead and many more injured, triggering a massive emergency response.
According to Chinese state media, the blast happened Monday afternoon at the Huasheng fireworks plant in Liuyang, a city known for its fireworks industry. The explosion struck around 4:43 p.m., sending shockwaves through the surrounding area.
At least 26 people have been confirmed dead, while 61 others were injured.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene in large numbers, with nearly 500 responders deployed across five teams. Authorities also used drones, robots, and search dogs in the effort to locate victims and assess the damage.
The explosion caused widespread destruction, with buildings collapsing and windows in nearby homes blown out. Thick white smoke continued to rise from the site even into the following day.
Officials say the injured range in age from their 20s to their 60s, with many suffering broken bones and other trauma from flying debris.
In response to the danger, emergency crews evacuated the area and sprayed water to reduce the risk of additional explosions during rescue operations.
Local authorities have detained the factory’s owner as investigators work to determine what caused the blast.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an “all-out” rescue effort, urging officials to search for anyone still missing and provide urgent care to the injured. He also stressed the need for stronger safety measures to prevent similar disasters.
The tragedy comes amid a string of deadly incidents involving fireworks factories, including recent explosions in India that also claimed dozens of lives.
