House Ethics Committee Slams AOC Over ‘Tax the Rich’ Met Gala Dress

In a stunning rebuke of progressive darling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the House Ethics Committee has ruled that the New York congresswoman grossly underpaid for her infamous “Tax the Rich” dress worn at the 2021 Met Gala — and now she’s on the hook for thousands.

After a four-year investigation, the committee concluded Friday that Ocasio-Cortez, who has made a career railing against wealth and privilege, failed to pay a fair price for the designer gown she flaunted on one of the world’s most elite red carpets.

According to the panel’s findings, the far-left congresswoman only shelled out $1,000 to rent the custom Aurora James dress — despite the true rental value being more than triple that amount. The committee ruled that AOC must cough up an additional $2,733.28 to cover the difference.

“The fair market value of the services and attire provided far exceeded the amount paid,” the committee stated in its findings. “It would be appropriate for Representative Ocasio-Cortez to make additional payments totaling $2,733.28.”

The verdict hinges on long-standing ethics rules barring members of Congress from accepting gifts that could be considered “gratuities” or “favors,” including discounts. The rule is designed to prevent lawmakers from being improperly influenced by special treatment — especially from wealthy elites or corporations.

Even though AOC’s team claimed they tried to follow the rules, the committee found designer Aurora James likely gave the congresswoman a sweetheart deal because of her political profile.

“The designer may have lowered costs,” the panel noted — a move that violates the principle of equal treatment under House ethics laws.

Ironically, the dress — emblazoned with the phrase “Tax the Rich” in bright red letters — became a symbol of leftist hypocrisy as critics pointed out that AOC was rubbing elbows with the very elite she publicly condemns. Tickets to the Met Gala typically cost over $30,000 per guest, and the event is a who’s who of Hollywood, fashion moguls, and billionaires.

“It was always a stunt,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), one of AOC’s vocal critics. “She claims to fight for the poor but had no problem accepting a luxury gown and red-carpet treatment while working-class Americans were struggling.”

The designer dress was originally valued at a staggering $18,837.30, with the rental cost and associated services — including makeup, shoes, hair, and travel — estimated to be at least $3,724.04. Ocasio-Cortez’s payment of $1,000 fell well short.

In 2025, with President Trump back in the White House and Republicans regaining momentum in Congress, the Ethics Committee’s ruling is expected to further ignite calls for greater scrutiny of far-left figures who campaign on “equity” while indulging in elite privilege behind closed doors.

Ocasio-Cortez has not issued a direct statement in response to the ruling.

But for many critics, the takeaway is clear: “Tax the rich” may have looked good on a dress, but dodging accountability doesn’t wear well on a congresswoman.
