Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) took direct aim at Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Friday, dismissing her criticism of Democrats who supported the Trump-backed spending bill designed to prevent a government shutdown.
“Let her know just how little I care about her views on this,” Fetterman bluntly told reporters when asked about Ocasio-Cortez’s accusations of betrayal against Senate Democrats.
The confrontation highlights growing turmoil within the Democratic Party, as moderates openly clash with the progressive wing. Ocasio-Cortez had previously expressed outrage over her colleagues siding with Republicans, saying Democrats who supported the bill had committed “a deep betrayal.”
But Fetterman, increasingly seen as an independent voice willing to align with Republicans, was unfazed by her rhetoric.
“I stand for what’s right for Americans,” he said. “Maybe she can tell us what’s her plan if we shut down the government? What happens to millions of hardworking Americans who won’t get paid? She’s still getting a paycheck.”
Tensions intensified after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) received rare praise from former President Donald Trump for rallying bipartisan support for the bill, which passed comfortably by a 62-38 vote. The measure required the defection of eight Democrats; ten ultimately broke ranks, underscoring the deepening rift.
“This isn’t just politics—real lives are at stake,” Schumer defended his stance. Yet CNN reports internal party anger has spurred talks among New York Democrats urging Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer in his next Senate bid.
Fetterman’s alignment with Trump on pivotal issues is raising eyebrows. Following Trump’s election victory, Fetterman notably became the first Democratic senator to visit Mar-a-Lago. He also backed Trump’s controversial Gaza policy calling for Palestinian displacement, even suggesting U.S. military involvement. Last week, Fetterman publicly condemned fellow Democrats’ disruption of Trump’s Congressional address as “unhinged.”
Speculation about a potential party switch mounted, but Fetterman dismissed it forcefully, calling the rumors “amateur-hour nonsense.”
“I’m not here for partisan games,” Fetterman clarified. “I’m here for the American people, and if that means working across the aisle, I’ll do it every single time.”

I always understood that the country, our country and our peopleâs welfare comes first . I guess the demokrap donât see it, that way. I guess the demokrap party, in fact never really care about our country and our PEOPLE and even less our welfare. I certainly hope that THE PEOPLE, remember that  at  election time.
