A simple coffee order turned into an ugly confrontation at a California Dutch Bros when an angry customer allegedly hurled a cup of hot coffee at an employee who was trying to correct her drink.

The shocking incident unfolded around 5:45 p.m. on October 14 at the popular coffee chain’s location near Clinton and Cedar avenues in Fresno. According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the woman became upset after discovering her order was wrong and confronted an employee at the service window.

Rather than calming down when the worker attempted to resolve the mistake, the customer grew increasingly agitated. Moments later, she allegedly threw the hot beverage directly onto the employee, turning an ordinary customer complaint into a criminal investigation.

The disturbing encounter was captured on surveillance video, which authorities later released as they worked to identify the woman. Investigators said she walked away from the shop following the confrontation and drove off in a light-gray SUV, possibly a Hyundai Ioniq, displaying a temporary paper license plate.

Deputies initially described the suspect as a woman around 30 years old who was wearing a white T-shirt, gray sweatpants and blue sneakers. The sheriff’s office later identified and contacted her, according to a subsequent report, but she was not arrested.

Instead, investigators referred the case to the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of a misdemeanor battery charge. Prosecutors will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether the employee suffered burns or required medical treatment.

What began as a dispute over a drink could now leave the customer facing criminal consequences, with the surveillance footage documenting how quickly the confrontation escalated.
