Nearly 45 years after Natalie Wood’s mysterious drowning shocked Hollywood, her daughter is making an emotional plea to end the accusations that have haunted her family for decades, warning that her 96-year-old stepfather, Robert Wagner, may not have much time left.

Natasha Gregson Wagner, 56, is fighting back against years of speculation surrounding her mother’s death, insisting the aging Hollywood legend deserves to be remembered for the man who raised and protected his family rather than allegations that have never resulted in criminal charges.

In a revealing interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Natasha expressed growing concern about the damage the decades-old mystery has done to Wagner’s reputation.

“I think it’s reckless and dangerous when people make up lies or make assumptions that end up circulating as if they were the truth,” she said.

“My dad is 96 and a half, he probably doesn’t have much time left, and I don’t want his legacy to be tarnished by those falsehoods.”

Her powerful defense comes as the 45th anniversary of one of Hollywood’s most notorious unsolved deaths approaches, reviving memories of a glamorous weekend getaway that ended in tragedy and left investigators struggling to answer one haunting question: How did Natalie Wood end up in the ocean?

The beloved actress, whose unforgettable performances in West Side Story, Rebel Without a Cause, and Splendor in the Grass made her one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, was just 43 when she drowned off California’s Catalina Island on November 29, 1981.

Wood had been spending Thanksgiving weekend aboard the family yacht, Splendour, with Wagner, actor Christopher Walken, and boat captain Dennis Davern. By the following morning, she was dead, and the circumstances surrounding her final hours would become the subject of decades of conflicting accounts, investigations, and disturbing speculation.

Initially ruled an accidental drowning, Wood’s death took a dramatic turn in 2011 when Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators reopened the case following new witness statements and questions about what happened aboard the yacht.

In 2012, the coroner changed her death classification to drowning with other undetermined factors. Investigators pointed to unexplained bruising on her body and acknowledged that the circumstances of how she entered the water had never been clearly established.

The mystery deepened in 2018 when detectives publicly identified Wagner as a person of interest. However, no criminal charges were ever filed against him, and in May 2022, authorities confirmed that all investigative leads had been exhausted. The case remained open but unsolved, with Wagner subsequently reported to have been cleared of involvement.

Much of the controversy has centered on the conflicting recollections of the people aboard the yacht that night.

In his 2008 memoir, Pieces of My Heart, Wagner acknowledged getting into a heated argument with Walken over Wood’s acting career. He admitted smashing a wine bottle during the confrontation but maintained that his wife had gone below deck before the disagreement escalated.

According to Wagner, he later discovered that Wood was missing from their cabin. When he returned to the deck, he noticed the yacht’s dinghy was also gone.

Wagner has repeatedly denied involvement in his wife’s death and described the devastating guilt he experienced after losing her.

“Yes, I blamed myself,” he wrote in his memoir, questioning why he had not been there to protect her.

But Wood’s younger sister, Lana Wood, has long challenged Wagner’s account. In a 2018 interview with Megyn Kelly, Lana repeated claims attributed to boat captain Dennis Davern that a serious argument between Wagner and Wood had occurred before the actress disappeared.

Those allegations fueled public suspicion, but investigators were ultimately unable to establish that Wood’s death was a homicide.

For Natasha, the relentless scrutiny has meant spending much of her life defending the man who stepped in to raise her after her mother’s death.

Although Wagner was not her biological father, he adopted her and raised her alongside her sisters. Natasha described him as a constant source of love and stability during a childhood overshadowed by an unimaginable loss.

“He has been a force of love and protection for me,” she said, explaining that Wagner treated her as his own child and worked to preserve her mother’s memory.

She recalled how he frequently shared stories about Wood and passed along pieces of jewelry that had belonged to the actress, sometimes having the treasured items engraved for the daughters she left behind.

Rather than tearing the family apart, Natasha said the controversy ultimately strengthened their bond as they struggled to protect one another from the endless speculation.

She also wants the public to reconsider the way her mother has been remembered.

Despite the tragic circumstances of Wood’s death, Natasha rejected the notion that the actress was somehow destined for disaster. She described her mother as a strong, independent woman who enjoyed a remarkable career, meaningful friendships, and a loving family.

Natasha has worked to reclaim that legacy through the 2020 documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, a fragrance inspired by her mother’s signature scent, and a forthcoming book featuring her mother’s correspondence.

Her message is clear: Natalie Wood’s extraordinary life deserves to be remembered for far more than the mystery surrounding her final night.

Yet as the anniversary of her death approaches, the unanswered questions remain. Investigators have never established exactly how the actress entered the dark waters off Catalina Island, and the case remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring mysteries.

For Natasha, however, the battle is no longer simply about what happened on that November night. It is about protecting the memory of her mother and preserving the legacy of the 96-year-old man she credits with holding their family together after everything fell apart.
