Country music legend Wynonna Judd has made a heartbreaking admission about her famous sister, Ashley Judd, revealing that the two are no longer close as their troubled family continues to grapple with years of loss, painful memories and fractured relationships.

The 62-year-old singer confirmed that she and her younger sister, 58, are currently taking time apart, a surprising development nearly four years after the devastating death of their mother, country music icon Naomi Judd.

“We’re taking a break, which all families can relate to,” Wynonna told People magazine. “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”

Perhaps most telling is that Ashley hasn’t even heard Wynonna’s deeply personal new album, The Hard Truth, which was released October 2 and explores some of the darkest chapters of the singer’s life.

Although Wynonna insisted there was no particular incident behind their distance, she acknowledged that the sisters aren’t currently “connected.” She blamed their busy, separate lives rather than a specific disagreement and expressed confidence that they would eventually find their way back to one another.

The revelation is especially poignant considering everything the famous family has endured.

In April 2022, Naomi died by suicide at age 76, just one day before she and Wynonna were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as the legendary mother-daughter duo The Judds.

Her death left both daughters devastated, but it also brought them together during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Months afterward, Wynonna described their relationship as unusually tender and emotionally close, even as rumors swirled that the sisters were fighting over their mother’s estate. She firmly denied those claims, insisting there was no reason for them to battle over money.

Their complicated relationship, however, stretches back decades.

Growing up with different biological fathers, the sisters experienced a turbulent childhood marked by financial struggles before Naomi and Wynonna found extraordinary success in country music. Wynonna has previously explained that she helped raise Ashley while their mother worked, creating a bond that was sometimes more like a parent-child relationship than one between sisters.

As their careers took off, the two followed dramatically different paths. Wynonna became a Grammy-winning superstar alongside Naomi, while Ashley built a successful Hollywood career with films including Double Jeopardy and Kiss the Girls.

Now, the distance between them has become another painful chapter in a family history that Wynonna is finally confronting through her music.

Her latest album, her first solo studio release in a decade, explores grief, childhood struggles, family secrets and the emotional scars left by complicated relationships. Working alongside her husband, musician Cactus Moser, Wynonna co-wrote nine of the album’s ten tracks.

But the strained relationship with Ashley is far from the only family heartache weighing on the singer.

Wynonna is also struggling with her estrangement from her 30-year-old daughter, Grace Kelley, whose history of addiction and legal troubles has caused years of turmoil. Kelley is serving a 15-month sentence in Virginia, while Wynonna raises her 4-year-old granddaughter, Kaliyah.

In another painful revelation, Wynonna disclosed that she learned about the arrival of Kelley’s second child through TikTok rather than directly from her daughter.

The emotional toll of that separation has been enormous, and Wynonna has spoken openly about how desperately she misses Grace despite their difficult relationship.

Still, the country legend has found comfort in raising Kaliyah and in the music that has carried her through some of her most challenging years.

And while her relationship with Ashley remains distant, Wynonna has made one thing clear: She hasn’t given up hope that the sisters will eventually reconnect.

For a family whose story has been shaped by extraordinary fame, devastating loss and decades of complicated love, that possibility may be the most meaningful reconciliation of all.

Editorial verification: Wynonna’s comments originally appeared in a September 30, 2026, People interview, so I avoided presenting them as a new exclusive. I also removed the unsupported suggestion that the sisters’ separation began immediately after Naomi’s death. Wynonna specifically said there was no single incident behind their current distance. The album and family details were independently corroborated. People.com+2
