Naomi Judd and her husband Larry Strickland went through hell and back during their 33-year marriage—so much so, he’s now confirming the shocking rumor that she once fired a gun at him.
In Lifetime’s explosive new documentary The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, Strickland opens up about one of the most intense and volatile moments of their relationship. According to the country singer’s own account, the drama began in the 1980s when a woman from the Northeast called their Nashville home claiming she loved and missed Strickland. Naomi, devastated by the alleged affair, reportedly tossed his belongings into the yard and shredded their photos.
But it didn’t end there.
In a scene from the Love Can Build a Bridge TV movie, actress Kathleen York (as Naomi) shoots Bruce Greenwood (as Larry) after discovering his infidelity. And in a tense moment from the new documentary, Strickland watches the dramatization—then confirms it wasn’t just fiction.
“Well, it really happened,” he says. “That’s all I can say. That’s all I’m gonna say. It happened.”
Naomi and Larry first met in 1979 and got married ten years later in May 1989. They stayed together until Naomi’s tragic passing in April 2022 at the age of 76.
Strickland spoke with PEOPLE months after her death, revealing just how devoted he had been during her long battle with mental illness.
“For the past 13 years or more, I was with her 24/7,” he shared. “When you have a mate that has a mental illness, you walk that path with them.”
The Judd Family: Truth Be Told airs May 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime, promising more raw revelations from one of country music’s most complicated families.
