What was once a peaceful lakeside retreat for Polk County families has become the scene of jaw-dropping chaos — and the sheriff says he’s done playing nice.
Witnesses say the latest eruption of violence happened around 3 p.m. on August 2 at Lake Winterset, a 544-acre public lake surrounded by private homes in the Winter Haven Southern Chain of Lakes. Cellphone video shows shirtless men brawling in front of stunned parents and terrified children. Music blared with profanity-laced lyrics as fists flew and bodies hit the water.
One man was knocked unconscious and left floating facedown while a bikini-clad woman appeared to attempt chest compressions. Another was sucker-punched and collapsed in shallow water. In both cases, children stood just feet away.
Sheriff Grady Judd says this was the final straw. “You can knucklebust and create brain injuries to each other on your own property without disturbing your neighbors,” he said at a fiery press conference. “The conduct is reprehensible… so you have unleashed the teeth of the dog, and now we’re going to start biting you.”
Locals say this summer has been plagued by trespassers who dock their boats on private land and turn the shoreline into a party zone.
“They’re docking on the land, not the water,” said resident Gary Resmondo, 74. “On weekends, it’s horrible. I’m a Vietnam combat-disabled veteran, and I can’t even sit on my porch. I’m thinking about giving away my $2 million house and leaving.”
Judd claims “The Point” — a popular hangout spot on the lake — has seen public sex, loud music, drunken fights, and even someone defecating in a yard. “This is happening in the middle of the afternoon, in people’s backyards,” he warned.
By the time deputies arrived, the brawlers had scattered. Still, investigators identified and arrested eight suspects: Mason Land, 23; Nate Land, 21; Payton Ely, 19; Timothy “Owen” Gooding, 21; Gavin Gooding, 17; Richard Carden, 40; Garrett Ore, 22; and Garrett Hiltabidel, 21.
All face charges of trespassing, affray, disorderly conduct, and rioting. Gooding was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Sheriff Judd says the Marine Patrol will now actively monitor the area, arresting anyone who repeats this behavior. “We’re going to put people in jail this weekend for conduct we’ve already warned you about,” he said. “If you have three brain cells, you can read the ‘No Trespassing’ sign.”
Lake Winterset, once a postcard-worthy escape, is now a flashpoint for law enforcement’s crackdown on lakefront lawlessness. And Judd’s message is crystal clear: if you bring the chaos, you’re going to jail.
