In a terrifying turn of events overseas, a peaceful Berlin street turned into a disaster zone Wednesday when a vehicle suddenly rammed into a group of pedestrians—just moments after being stopped by police.

According to German authorities, the March 26th incident on Brunnenstrasse—just north of downtown Berlin—has now been officially classified as a “mass casualty incident.” Emergency crews say one person was left fighting for their life. At least five others, including a police officer, were injured.

Police Check Turns into Mayhem

Local officials say the vehicle—believed to be a taxi or private hire car—had just been pulled over by police when the driver “lurched” onto the sidewalk without warning. The car then smashed into a nearby building, striking bystanders in its path.

“The vehicle suddenly lurched from the roadway onto the sidewalk,” the Berlin Fire Department confirmed. “A pedestrian was trapped by the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries.”

Two of the injured were passengers from the vehicle that was stopped. A police officer and two other pedestrians were also hurt.

Bystanders Rushed to Help Before First Responders Arrived

As chaos erupted, bystanders and police leapt into action. Together, they were able to free the trapped pedestrian before fire crews arrived on the scene.

“Our team administered first aid immediately upon arrival,” said a spokesperson for the Berlin Fire Department. “A total of 22 vehicles and 60 personnel were deployed to manage the crisis.”

Officials say eight individuals in total were assessed by emergency responders. Four were transported to local hospitals—one in critical condition.

Authorities Launch Investigation, Motive Unclear

At this stage, the motive behind the crash remains a mystery. The driver’s identity and background have not been released.

The area around the crash site was locked down for hours while rescue and technical teams inspected the vehicle, the building, and surrounding infrastructure. Fire officials confirmed there was no structural damage that required further action.

Berlin police have taken control of the investigation, and many questions remain.

Was this a medical emergency? A reckless act? Or something more sinister?

Locals are demanding answers.

“This should never have happened,” said one nearby resident. “We walk this street every day. It could’ve been any one of us.”

As Europe faces growing challenges with urban safety, terrorism concerns, and rising migrant-related tensions, many are watching this story closely for any indication of intent.
