A moment of triumph turned into a nightmare Monday night as a gray minivan plowed into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their team’s Premier League victory. Eyewitnesses say the driver accelerated through the crowd “like a battering ram,” leaving injured fans sprawled across Water Street near the iconic Liver Building.
One Arrested, Dozens Injured
Police confirmed they arrested a 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool at the scene. Merseyside Police say the man drove directly into a dense gathering of fans just after 6:00 p.m. local time. Early reports suggest the act may have been intentional.
“The vehicle did not flee. It stopped, and the driver was immediately detained,” said Superintendent Rob Carr of the Merseyside Police. “We are investigating all possible motives, including whether this was a targeted attack.”
Celebration Turns to Carnage
Tens of thousands of fans had packed Liverpool’s city center earlier that day, despite wet weather, to watch their team parade the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2020. Buses rolled slowly through cheering crowds as players waved flags and banners marked “Ours Again.”
But the joy quickly turned to terror.
Harry Rashid, who was celebrating with his wife and two young daughters, said he watched in horror as the van struck people just feet away from them.
“We heard the thumps—one after another—people flying off the hood,” Rashid said. “Then he stopped for a second. People ran at the van, breaking the windows, trying to pull him out. And then… he floored it again.”
‘Like a War Zone’
Video posted to social media before being taken down at the request of police showed the van smashing into at least one pedestrian, then surging through a crowd, bodies tumbling under and around it. Police have pleaded with the public not to share graphic footage, urging anyone with information or video evidence to submit it through official channels.
“There were people screaming, blood on the pavement. My daughter was crying. This was supposed to be a day to remember—for good reasons,” Rashid said.
Prime Minister Calls Incident ‘Appalling’
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the tragedy Monday evening.
“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling,” he said. “My thoughts are with all those injured. We must allow Merseyside Police the time and space to carry out a thorough investigation.”
Local hospitals treated multiple victims for serious injuries. No deaths have yet been confirmed, but officials warned the situation remains fluid.
A City Stunned
Liverpool, a city with a deep and emotional connection to football, has seen its share of triumph and tragedy. The haunting memory of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 still echoes through its streets—and for some, Monday’s attack reopened old wounds.
“There’s an understanding in Liverpool—what it means to suffer as fans, as a community,” said lifelong supporter Jordan Beale. “This was an attack on our joy.”
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities say they are exploring all avenues, including the possibility of terrorism or politically motivated violence. For now, police are keeping a heavy presence in the city center as they review surveillance footage and question witnesses.
