A relentless search for a missing Hawaii woman took a heartbreaking twist when her father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically died after jumping from a parking garage near Los Angeles International Airport.
Kobayashi, 54, had spent nearly two weeks combing the city for his daughter, Hannah, who vanished under mysterious circumstances earlier this month.
Authorities discovered Kobayashi’s body around 4 a.m. Sunday. His death comes as the family grapples with the agony of Hannah’s unexplained disappearance.
“This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably,” said a spokesperson for a nonprofit assisting in the search for Hannah. “Ryan was the pillar of his family. While they grieve, we urge the public to stay vigilant in helping us locate Hannah.”
A Troubling Disappearance
Hannah Kobayashi, 30, had been en route from Maui to New York to visit her aunt. However, she failed to board her connecting flight at LAX on November 8. Instead, surveillance footage captured her leaving the airport and heading downtown on the metro.
The next day, a TikTok video showed Hannah at The Grove, a popular Los Angeles shopping center. That same day, she sent a mysterious Venmo payment to two unknown individuals.
By November 11, unsettling text messages to her mother suggested something was wrong.
“I didn’t make it to New York,” she wrote. Later, she sent cryptic messages to friends, claiming someone was targeting her. “I don’t feel safe. Someone’s trying to steal my identity and my money.”
In one alarming message, she confessed, “I got tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds. From someone I thought I loved.”
Her family grew increasingly concerned when her texts began to sound unlike her. Words like “hun,” which she never used, appeared in her messages. That same day, a photo was uploaded to her Instagram, but no one has heard from her since.
A Father’s Determined Search
Ryan Kobayashi, a devoted father and longtime Maui resident, became the face of the family’s desperate search.
“We’re just hoping she’s safe and healthy and alive,” he said in an interview earlier this month. “If anybody knows anything, we’d appreciate any help.”
For 13 grueling days, he tirelessly pursued leads, even as the trail grew colder.
