The disappearance of 31-year-old Hannah Kobayashi has taken a chilling turn. Two mysterious Venmo payments, cryptic texts, and a devastating family tragedy have left both police and loved ones desperate for answers.
Kobayashi, an up-and-coming photographer from Maui, vanished after missing a connecting flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on November 8. She was en route to New York for a photography assignment—a dream trip she called her “bucket list.”
Now, investigators are examining two puzzling Venmo transactions Kobayashi made on November 9. Within the span of an hour, she sent payments to a Jonathan Taylor and a Veronica Almendarez. The payment to Almendarez included a bow and arrow emoji. The transaction to Taylor was labeled simply as “reading.”
A source close to the investigation told The U.S. Sun the payments were for a tarot card reading, a practice Kobayashi had reportedly become interested in recently. However, neither Taylor nor Almendarez had any prior financial history with her, raising further questions.
Internet sleuths quickly tracked down a TikTok account linked to Taylor, flooding it with comments. The account has since gone private, adding another layer of intrigue.
Before she vanished, Kobayashi sent disturbing text messages to family members. The texts were unsettling and unlike her usual tone.
“She mentioned feeling scared and believed someone was trying to steal her money and identity,” said her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, in an interview with KTLA. “She talked about ‘the matrix.’ It didn’t sound like her at all. And then, silence. No more communication.”
The last confirmed sighting of Kobayashi was on November 11. Security cameras captured her at a Metro station and later at LAX. Despite this, authorities confirmed she never boarded a flight.
Earlier that day, surveillance footage also placed her in downtown Los Angeles near a shopping center and Crypto.com Arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers. Her cellphone has been off or dead ever since.
Pidgeon, who flew in from Northern California, has been leading the search efforts alongside other family members. Kobayashi’s aunt from New York and her father, Ryan Kobayashi, also joined the search.
On Sunday, November 24, tragedy struck again. Hannah’s father, 58-year-old Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot at LAX. He took his own life after nearly two weeks of tirelessly searching for his daughter.
“He died of a broken heart,” Pidgeon told The Daily Beast. “He couldn’t take it. He loved his daughter endlessly.”
Despite the devastating loss, Pidgeon remains determined. She fears her niece may have been abducted or trafficked but refuses to give up hope.
“Ryan was searching every corner of Los Angeles, even places like Skid Row,” she said. “We are not stopping. We will find her.”
As the search continues, the community has rallied behind the Kobayashi family. A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $40,000 to support search efforts. Volunteers have been distributing fliers, organizing rallies, and amplifying Kobayashi’s story across social media.
“Hannah, we are tirelessly searching for you,” Pidgeon said in an emotional plea shared with The Daily Beast. “We are keeping hope alive. We are sharing your name. We are making people pay attention to you. We love you with everything we are, and I need you to hold on because we’re not giving up.”
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has remained tight-lipped about the investigation, declining to comment on the Venmo payments or the ongoing search.
For now, all eyes are on Los Angeles as the city’s 18 million residents unknowingly harbor the answer to a heartbreaking mystery.
Anyone with information on Hannah Kobayashi’s whereabouts is urged to contact the LAPD immediately.
