A New Jersey father is being hailed as a hero after he was brutally murdered while standing up for his teenage daughter—allegedly at the hands of a family his own had once trusted.

Louis “Gus” Serbeck, 54, a well-known bodybuilder and devoted dad from Millville, was killed Easter Sunday in what prosecutors are calling a “savage and calculated attack.” The incident occurred after Serbeck drove with his daughter, Brooke, 19, to confront a teenage boy who she claimed assaulted her just days earlier.

According to authorities, the teen—identified only as J.H., 17—and his father, Eric Hannah, 54, allegedly turned a conversation into a deadly ambush outside their Vineland, New Jersey home.

“They didn’t meet him with words,” said a source close to the investigation. “They met him with weapons.”

A Father’s Final Stand

The confrontation began around 4 p.m. on March 31, just days after Brooke told her father she had been attacked by J.H. at his home on April 19. Serbeck decided to handle it the way any father would—face to face.

But moments after arriving, what started as a heated argument exploded into violence. According to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, J.H. suddenly attacked Serbeck, then grabbed a metal baseball bat and repeatedly struck him in the head. His father, Eric Hannah, joined in—bashing Serbeck’s skull with a metal flashlight.

Brooke was forced to watch her father’s brutal beating. At one point, prosecutors say the teen attacker even struck her.

Serbeck was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He died before he arrived.

Suspects Behind Bars

Police arrested both J.H. and Eric Hannah at the scene. Hannah has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. His son is facing homicide charges as well as an additional count of aggravated assault for allegedly striking Brooke.

Both remain in custody—Hannah at the Cumberland County Jail and his son in a juvenile detention facility.

In a tragic twist, Serbeck’s younger brother, Christopher, told ABC News that the elder Hannah had once been a “lifelong friend of the family.”

A Legacy of Strength and Sacrifice

Friends say Serbeck was as tough as they come—a lifelong athlete and avid outdoorsman with a reputation for loyalty and fierce family values.

“He literally laid his life down for his daughter,” said his brother Christopher. “Gus would give the shirt off his back to a stranger. If you needed help, he showed up.”

According to his obituary, Serbeck lived for his two daughters and his grandchildren. He was “never happier than when he had one of his daughters in his arms.”

A skilled craftsman by trade and a loving grandfather, Serbeck’s final act of bravery is being remembered as the ultimate sacrifice.

“He wasn’t just a protector. He was a lion when it came to his girls,” said one family friend.

Unanswered Questions Remain

The original incident between Brooke and J.H. that sparked the confrontation has not been made public. Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said she could not release further details.

The family is now demanding full accountability and transparency.

“This wasn’t a fight. This was a setup,” said a relative who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Gus walked into a trap, and he paid for it with his life.”

Public Support Grows

A GoFundMe campaign to assist the Serbeck family has raised nearly $11,000. His funeral was held April 26.

Supporters have flooded the donation page with messages praising Gus as a “true American father” and “a man of principle.”

“Real men protect their families,” one donor wrote. “What happened to Gus is a tragedy—and justice better be served.”

The investigation remains ongoing.

  1. Another good case here for the death penalty to be restored. This guy and son need not to breathe air any longer.

  2. I cannot BELIEVE what the daughter is wearing, a SEE-THRU DRESS!!!! No wonder she’s having boys come on to her!! This was so so sad, that someone would do that to a man, he definitely was set up… He should have had 1-2 more people go with him, just in case they drew a gun, or was getting the upper hand in the fight. This was NOT acceptable!!! Daughter, PLEASE don’t continue to dress this way, it will definitely have boys AND men go nuts to get close to her. And your father’s legacy will mean nothing!! GEEZE
