In a move that reshapes the leadership of one of the nation’s most influential legal offices, Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor, Damian Williams, announced his resignation effective December 13.

The decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to install his own pick, former SEC chairman Jay Clayton, to lead the prestigious Southern District of New York (SDNY).

“Today is a bittersweet day for me,” Williams said in a heartfelt statement. “It is bitter in the sense that I am leaving my dream job, leading an institution I love that is filled with the finest public servants in the world. It is sweet in that I am confident I am leaving at a time when the Office is functioning at an incredibly high level.”

Williams, a Biden appointee who took office in November 2021, has been at the center of several high-profile cases. His tenure saw prosecutions against notable figures like former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, cementing his reputation as a fearless enforcer of the law.

Sources close to the matter suggest that the resignation is part of a broader shift anticipated under Trump’s incoming administration. Earlier this month, Trump announced plans to nominate Jay Clayton, known for his role at the SEC during the Trump presidency, as Williams’ successor.

This change signals a potential redirection for the SDNY, a district with a storied history of tackling cases involving powerful figures and complex financial crimes. The office, often referred to as the “Sovereign District,” has wielded influence far beyond its geographic boundaries.

Williams’ deputy, Edward Y. Kim, will temporarily take over as acting U.S. attorney until Clayton’s nomination is finalized.

Political analysts view the move as a strategic placement by Trump, whose previous interactions with the SDNY included investigations into his own businesses and associates. “It’s no secret that the SDNY holds a unique place in the federal judiciary,” said a former Justice Department official. “Whoever leads it will shape not just local but national cases with major political implications.”

As the transition looms, Williams leaves behind a legacy defined by high-profile wins and an emphasis on integrity. His departure marks the end of an era and the beginning of what many expect to be a contentious chapter in the SDNY’s history.
