Vice President Kamala Harris found herself the center of attention on Monday during her visit to Michigan’s Hemlock Semiconductor facility, as she was cautioned to โ€œkeep her hands to herselfโ€ while inspecting some sharp, โ€œshinyโ€ silicon components on the factory floor.

The 60-year-old Vice Presidentโ€™s curiosity was piqued by a large piece of silicon on display, covered in protective wrap. As Harris reached toward it, a factory worker quickly warned, โ€œDo not touch it.โ€

Harris smiled, responding, โ€œIโ€™m glad I asked.โ€ The Hemlock team clarified that the enticing โ€œpolyโ€ components were not only delicate but โ€œvery sharp,โ€ ensuring she understood the risks. โ€œOK โ€ฆ and shiny,โ€ she observed with a smile, this time resisting the urge to reach out.

Onlookers quickly reacted, comparing her actions to those of the hapless Selina Meyer, the fictional Vice President from HBOโ€™s political satire Veep.

Former RNC communications specialist Steve Guest was quick to post on X (formerly Twitter), โ€œThis is straight out of Veep,โ€ sharing a clip of Harrisโ€™ interaction. The Trump campaign also jumped at the opportunity, sharing their critique on social media with a post reading, โ€œSheโ€™s totally helpless.โ€

Hemlock Semiconductor, the nation’s only U.S.-based producer of ultra-pure polysilicon crucial for semiconductor chips, recently benefited from a $325 million federal grant as part of the Biden-Harris administration’s push to strengthen domestic chip production. Located in Michigan, a key battleground state in upcoming elections, the facility tour underscored the administrationโ€™s investment in critical manufacturingโ€”but the gaffe quickly became the focus.

With Michiganโ€™s 15 electoral votes on the line in 2024, Harris may need more than federal grants to win over skeptical voters.

Polls show her trailing former President Donald Trump by a razor-thin margin in Michigan, with the RealClearPolitics average currently placing her just a tenth of a point behind. This visit may not have done much to close that gapโ€”at least, according to the social media crowd.
