Vice President Kamala Harris found herself the center of attention on Monday during her visit to Michigan’s Hemlock Semiconductor facility, as she was cautioned to “keep her hands to herself” while inspecting some sharp, “shiny” silicon components on the factory floor.

The 60-year-old Vice President’s curiosity was piqued by a large piece of silicon on display, covered in protective wrap. As Harris reached toward it, a factory worker quickly warned, “Do not touch it.”

Harris smiled, responding, “I’m glad I asked.” The Hemlock team clarified that the enticing “poly” components were not only delicate but “very sharp,” ensuring she understood the risks. “OK … and shiny,” she observed with a smile, this time resisting the urge to reach out.

Onlookers quickly reacted, comparing her actions to those of the hapless Selina Meyer, the fictional Vice President from HBO’s political satire Veep.

Former RNC communications specialist Steve Guest was quick to post on X (formerly Twitter), “This is straight out of Veep,” sharing a clip of Harris’ interaction. The Trump campaign also jumped at the opportunity, sharing their critique on social media with a post reading, “She’s totally helpless.”

Hemlock Semiconductor, the nation’s only U.S.-based producer of ultra-pure polysilicon crucial for semiconductor chips, recently benefited from a $325 million federal grant as part of the Biden-Harris administration’s push to strengthen domestic chip production. Located in Michigan, a key battleground state in upcoming elections, the facility tour underscored the administration’s investment in critical manufacturing—but the gaffe quickly became the focus.

With Michigan’s 15 electoral votes on the line in 2024, Harris may need more than federal grants to win over skeptical voters.

Polls show her trailing former President Donald Trump by a razor-thin margin in Michigan, with the RealClearPolitics average currently placing her just a tenth of a point behind. This visit may not have done much to close that gap—at least, according to the social media crowd.
