A Catholic priest was killed in a horrifying accident when a massive crucifix suddenly fell from the wall behind an altar and struck him during a church service that was being broadcast live.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was celebrating Mass on Saturday, October 17, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador, when the tragedy unfolded in front of his congregation.
The shocking incident was captured on a livestream, leaving worshippers inside the church and those watching online stunned.
According to local news reports, Sánchez Molinari was standing near the altar leading prayers when the large wooden crucifix, which featured a figure of Jesus Christ, unexpectedly detached from the wall.
The heavy structure fell forward and struck the priest, causing fatal injuries.
The accident reportedly occurred approximately 27 minutes into the service.
Video circulating on social media shows the crucifix beginning to shift before suddenly falling toward the priest.
Terrified worshippers immediately rushed to help, with some calling for emergency medical assistance.
Despite efforts to save him, Sánchez Molinari died from his injuries.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death in a statement issued by Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, the city’s archbishop.
Church officials described the priest as a beloved member of the Catholic community and offered condolences to his family, friends and fellow clergy.
“Our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, has departed for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory,” the archdiocese said in its announcement.
The statement also offered prayers for the priest’s eternal rest and expressed solidarity with members of his religious order.
Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious community founded in Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori.
The order is widely recognized for its missionary work and commitment to serving disadvantaged communities.
Sánchez Molinari had devoted years to his ministry, including serving as a parish priest in Vinces, a city in Ecuador’s Los Ríos Province, before moving to Guayaquil.
Following news of his death, his former parish community in Vinces shared a tribute remembering his years of service.
Church members recalled his dedication to parish life and his commitment to the people he served.
His death has been especially difficult for those who witnessed the accident during what should have been an ordinary religious service.
The livestream has since circulated widely online, drawing an outpouring of sympathy from Catholics and other viewers around the world.
The circumstances surrounding the crucifix’s collapse remain unclear.
Authorities have not publicly determined whether the structure fell because of damaged supports, faulty installation, deteriorating materials or another problem.
No official findings have been released explaining why the heavy religious fixture detached from the wall.
The accident also raises questions about the safety of large decorative structures installed above areas where people regularly gather.
Heavy religious fixtures, statues and other overhead decorations require secure mounting and maintenance, particularly in older buildings where materials can deteriorate over time.
However, there has been no confirmed finding that poor maintenance or negligence contributed to this tragedy.
For the Catholic community in Guayaquil, the loss is particularly heartbreaking because Sánchez Molinari died while performing the religious duties to which he had dedicated his life.
The parish had regularly shared its services through social media, allowing people who could not attend in person to participate in Mass remotely.
Saturday’s broadcast was intended to provide that same connection with the congregation.
Instead, it captured an accident that has left parishioners mourning their priest and searching for answers.
As the community remembers Sánchez Molinari’s years of ministry, church officials are asking worshippers to keep his family and fellow clergy in their prayers.
The cause of the crucifix’s collapse has not yet been established.
