Former Nun Marries Priest She Met While Battling Depression: “God Wrote Our Love Story”

It sounds like a movie — but for one former nun and a onetime Catholic priest in Brazil, it’s divine reality.

Lais Dognini, once a Carmelite sister devoted to a life of silence and prayer, has revealed she secretly married the man who once offered to “pray her back to peace.” Her husband, Jackson Dognini, is a former priest who left the seminary after years of soul-searching — and after realizing he’d fallen in love.

The couple’s unlikely romance, first reported by O Globo, began not in a dating app or a crowded café, but in a moment of faith.

For years, Lais, now 31, lived in a convent outside São Paulo, waking before dawn for prayer and vows of poverty. But her world collapsed when she developed severe depression, prompting her to leave religious life and return home.

“It felt like my faith had gone silent,” she later told local followers in a livestream. “I didn’t know who I was outside those walls.”

Her story took a dramatic turn when Jackson, still training for the priesthood, reached out with a simple message: “I’ll pray for you.”

That message turned into late-night conversations and, eventually, love.

The two, who had never even spoken during years of missionary work in the same church circles, started exchanging messages regularly after her departure from the convent. Over time, the friendship deepened into something neither could ignore.

Jackson, 34, says his decision to leave the seminary didn’t come lightly.
“I prayed for months asking if I was betraying God,” he said in a local radio interview. “But love isn’t against faith — it’s part of it.”

He officially left the seminary in 2023, and by April 2024, the pair began dating. Six months later, they got engaged — and in March of this year, they quietly exchanged vows in a small, private ceremony.

When they finally revealed their marriage this week on Instagram, fans erupted with support. Lais, who now has over 16,000 followers, posted a photo of her husband kissing her forehead, captioned: “God’s plans are better than ours.”

“It doesn’t seem like much, right?” she joked in a post. “But let’s face it — we’re adults now, and we know what we want in life.”

Dozens of supporters filled her comments with blessings. One user wrote, “It wasn’t an escape from their calling — it was a reunion with it.” Another added, “God writes straight with lines we don’t understand.”
