A Missouri high school football referee has been suspended indefinitely after a startling on-field confrontation in which video appears to show the official grabbing a teenage player following a touchdown celebration.
The incident unfolded Thursday night during Glendale High School’s 35-6 victory over rival Kickapoo in Springfield.
I’ve received a statement from a MSHSAA member after this incident (video below) during Thursday night’s matchup between Glendale and Kickapoo. “We were made aware of the situation, and the official in question has been suspended indefinitely.” 🎥: @ShotzByLogan https://t.co/UNRQARJE9Z

Glendale senior Joelle Rover had just broken free for a 47-yard touchdown when he celebrated with teammates in the end zone, including briefly performing a dance move.
As Rover headed back toward the sideline, video captured by a photographer shows an official approaching the player, grabbing hold of his jersey or upper body and turning him around.
The referee then stood face-to-face with Rover as the two exchanged words.
Another official quickly stepped in and pulled the referee away, apparently attempting to prevent the confrontation from escalating further.
As Rover continued walking away, he could be seen saying something toward the official. The referee appeared to respond before returning toward the field.
The encounter immediately caught the attention of Glendale head coach Frank Tristan, who was later captured on video confronting another official about what had happened.
“He doesn’t need to be touching our player,” Tristan said. “You come talk to me. That’s ridiculous. He needs to grow up.”
Tristan later told the Springfield News-Leader that the incident was “disappointing all the way around” and said it overshadowed what otherwise had been a strong night for his team.
Glendale had been penalized for an excessive touchdown celebration earlier in the game, according to local reporting. Tristan said he wondered whether lingering frustration over the earlier celebration may have contributed to what happened, although he stressed that he did not know the referee’s motivation.
Rover was not reportedly penalized for the celebration that preceded the confrontation.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association moved quickly after video of the incident surfaced.
“We were made aware of the situation, and the official in question has been suspended indefinitely,” MSHSAA Communications Director Andrew Kauffman said.
Springfield Public Schools also raised concerns about the encounter and contacted MSHSAA to review what happened.
Glendale Principal Josh Groves said he was at the game but did not witness the confrontation as it occurred. He was later alerted by a parent and subsequently watched the video.
The official’s name was not included in MSHSAA’s initial statement, and the association had not publicly announced how long its review could take or whether additional disciplinary action might follow.
The controversy overshadowed an otherwise dominant performance by Glendale.
The Falcons defeated Kickapoo 35-6, improving to 4-3 and extending their winning streak to three games. Glendale has scored at least 35 points in each of those victories.
Kickapoo fell to 1-6.
Glendale is scheduled to travel to Ozark on Oct. 16, while Kickapoo is set to host Waynesville the same night.
For Tristan, however, the concern after Thursday’s game was bigger than the scoreboard. His message was clear: whatever disagreement an official may have with a player’s behavior, coaches should be the ones approached rather than allowing the situation to turn physical.
