Dame Helen Mirren may be Hollywood royalty, but the Oscar-winning actress has a surprisingly wild past that includes cocaine, LSD and a shocking discovery that changed her attitude toward drugs forever.

The 81-year-old star of MobLand has spoken candidly about experimenting with illegal substances during her younger years, admitting she once enjoyed taking cocaine at parties. But her recreational drug use came to an abrupt end after she learned about a disturbing connection between the cocaine trade and one of history’s most notorious Nazi war criminals.

“I loved coke. I never did a lot, just a little bit at parties,” Mirren revealed in a candid 2008 interview with GQ magazine that has recently resurfaced in celebrity news coverage.

The actress explained that her perspective changed in the early 1980s, when she read reports about Klaus Barbie, the former Nazi Gestapo chief nicknamed the “Butcher of Lyon,” who had been living in South America after World War II.

Barbie, who was responsible for horrific crimes during the Nazi occupation of France, was linked to the cocaine trade while hiding in Bolivia. When Mirren learned about his reported involvement, she began questioning where the drugs she had casually enjoyed at parties actually came from.

The revelation left such a lasting impression that she decided to give up cocaine completely.

Mirren said she had never fully considered the violence and exploitation behind the international drug trade, or how even occasional recreational use could help financially support dangerous criminal networks.

The actress also admitted experimenting with LSD during her 20s, recalling an intense experience in the countryside that she described as both magical and overwhelming.

Although she enjoyed the experience, Mirren said it was powerful enough to convince her never to repeat it.

Marijuana was another drug she tried during her younger years, but unlike cocaine, she found the experience unpleasant. Ultimately, she decided her acting career was far more important than any temporary high.

“That was my ultimate drug,” Mirren said of her dedication to her profession.

Now in her ninth decade, the legendary British actress has an entirely different outlook on life. Rather than dwelling on her wild younger years, she has become an outspoken advocate for embracing aging and making the most of every opportunity.

In a recent interview with Allure, Mirren expressed her enthusiasm for growing older, saying she still finds tremendous pleasure in working, watching movies, listening to music and enjoying life’s simple moments.

Her extraordinary career certainly shows no signs of slowing down. Best known for her Academy Award-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen, Mirren has continued taking on major film and television roles well into her 80s.

She has also shared memorable stories about meeting the late monarch, including an awkward afternoon tea when she was too nervous to ask Prince Philip to pass the milk.

Despite decades in the spotlight, Mirren remains refreshingly candid about her personal experiences, including decisions she now views very differently.

And while she has few regrets about enjoying life to the fullest, her days of experimenting with cocaine are firmly behind her.

Editorial note: I verified that Mirren’s cocaine comments originated in a 2008 GQ interview, rather than a new 2026 confession. The headline uses “confession” without suggesting she has only just revealed it. Reporting from The Guardian and the Associated Press confirms the original remarks. I’ve focused the rewrite on the strongest angle, removed unrelated material, and kept the drug discussion non-graphic and non-glorifying.
