A high school soccer playoff game in Ohio erupted into chaos when a furious player charged at a referee and slammed into him, leaving the official hospitalized with broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
The disturbing confrontation unfolded Tuesday night, Oct. 27, during a heated matchup between Steubenville and New Philadelphia. Video of the incident quickly spread across social media, sparking outrage and demands for severe punishment.
The trouble began in the closing minutes of the game, when a Steubenville player collided with New Philadelphia’s goalkeeper, prompting a foul. As tensions escalated, another Steubenville player appeared to exchange words with an official, who reportedly pulled out a red card.
What happened next stunned spectators.
As the referee moved across the field, another Steubenville player suddenly sprinted toward him from roughly 12 yards away and drove his shoulder into the official’s midsection, sending him crashing to the turf.
The referee appeared to be in pain as another player intervened to keep the situation from escalating further.
The injuries proved far more serious than initially apparent. According to TMZ Sports, the official was rushed to a hospital, where he received treatment for multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) later confirmed that the referee was “doing better,” although his full recovery timeline remains unclear.
The shocking footage has prompted widespread criticism, with some viewers calling for criminal charges against the player involved.
Meanwhile, the OHSAA has made it clear that the incident will not be taken lightly.
“Physical violence against an official is among the most serious offenses that a coach, player or fan can commit,” OHSAA communications director Tim Stried told local radio station WJER, adding that the association intends to pursue the matter fully.
Steubenville City Schools has since confirmed that disciplinary action was imposed following a review conducted in cooperation with the athletic association. However, district officials declined to reveal the specific punishment, citing student privacy laws.
The OHSAA could still impose additional penalties, although no further sanctions had been confirmed in the initial reports.
New Philadelphia ultimately defeated Steubenville 2-1, advancing to face Dover in Thursday’s district championship game.
But the final score was overshadowed by the violent confrontation, which has raised serious concerns about player conduct and the safety of officials at high school sporting events.
