More than a year after former New York Giants cornerback Sam Beal mysteriously vanished during an unexpected trip from Michigan to Virginia Beach, his family is still searching for answers.
Beal, now 30, has not been seen or heard from since July 2025, leaving behind a troubling trail that included an abandoned vehicle, personal belongings and a final phone call from hundreds of miles away.
According to missing-person information released in the case, Beal was last seen on July 12, 2025, after dropping his girlfriend off at a family member’s home in Caledonia, Michigan.
He reportedly borrowed his girlfriend’s vehicle and was expected to head to work.
Instead, Beal apparently drove more than 700 miles to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
His girlfriend reportedly spoke with him by phone on July 13. Beal told her he was in Virginia Beach and indicated that he planned to return home.
He never did.
The vehicle was later recovered in Virginia Beach without Beal inside. His shoes and socks were reportedly found on the floor of the front passenger area, while sand was also discovered inside the vehicle.
Authorities have not publicly explained why Beal traveled to Virginia Beach or what happened to him after his final known conversation.
The Black and Missing Foundation lists Beal as an endangered missing person and describes the circumstances surrounding his disappearance simply as unknown.
Beal is approximately 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Months after he disappeared, Beal’s older sister, Essence Zhane, issued an emotional public appeal for information.
She said the family had spent months attempting to piece together what happened but desperately needed additional help.
Her plea brought national attention to a case that had largely remained outside the spotlight despite Beal’s previous NFL career.
The case stretches back to Michigan, where Beal grew up and later became a standout defensive back at Western Michigan University.
The New York Giants selected him in the third round of the 2018 supplemental draft, sacrificing their third-round selection in the following year’s regular NFL Draft to acquire him.
At the time, the Giants described Beal as a talented and athletic prospect with the potential to develop into a major contributor.
His professional career, however, was repeatedly interrupted by injuries.
A shoulder injury required surgery and wiped out his rookie season before he ever appeared in a regular-season game. Additional injuries limited his playing time afterward.
Beal eventually appeared in nine NFL games across the 2019 and 2021 seasons, starting three of them.
He also opted out of the 2020 NFL season during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His time with the Giants ultimately ended in 2021.
Beal also experienced legal problems during and after his playing career.
In June 2021, he pleaded guilty to two firearm-related charges stemming from a traffic stop near Cleveland the previous year.
NFL.com reported at the time that Beal had been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, improperly handling a firearm in a vehicle and marijuana possession. As part of the case, he entered a diversion program and was placed on probation.
More recently, reporting based on Beal’s missing-person file indicated that he spent several months in jail between September 2024 and February 2025 over unpaid child-support obligations.
A witness interviewed during the missing-person investigation reportedly expressed concern about changes in Beal’s behavior after his release.
The witness also described troubling comments allegedly made by Beal before he vanished suggesting he had been struggling emotionally.
Those statements have drawn attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding his disappearance, but authorities have not publicly concluded that they explain what happened to him.
There has also been no publicly confirmed evidence that Beal was the victim of a crime.
That distinction is important as investigators continue trying to determine whether he disappeared voluntarily, suffered an accident, encountered someone after reaching Virginia Beach or experienced some other event.
His case remains open more than 15 months after his last known contact.
Anyone with credible information about Beal’s whereabouts or movements around the time of his disappearance is being urged to contact law enforcement.
For his family, the long wait has become a search not only for Beal but for an explanation of how a former NFL player could drive hundreds of miles from home, leave behind a vehicle and seemingly disappear without a trace.
