Meghan Markle may be preparing for a dramatic return to Britain with Prince Harry — but reports claim she is keeping one foot firmly planted in California.

The Duchess of Sussex has allegedly agreed to spend just six months in the U.K. as part of a trial run, with insiders claiming she has no intention of immediately giving up the couple’s sprawling Montecito home.

According to claims published by Rob Shuter in his Naughty But Nice Substack, Meghan views the proposed move as temporary unless life back across the Atlantic proves to be a success.

“Meghan is agreeing to try it, but she isn’t moving back to Britain,” one source claimed. “Six months is the test. She wants an exit strategy.”

That alleged safety net reportedly includes keeping the Sussexes’ California mansion, along with their vacation property in Portugal.

For Meghan, 44, the biggest concern may be what she would be leaving behind.

She has spent years building a life and social circle in California since she and Harry stepped away from senior royal duties in 2020. Reports suggest she remains uneasy about returning to a country where her support network is far smaller.

Another source claimed the situation could eventually put Harry, 41, in an uncomfortable position.

“Eventually, Harry may have to choose between his wife’s happiness and his country,” the insider alleged. “That is the nightmare scenario nobody wants to talk about.”

Adding to the family drama, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is reportedly unhappy about the possibility of her daughter and grandchildren moving thousands of miles away.

Harry and Meghan’s children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have also reportedly been enrolled in British schools, although the Sussexes have not publicly confirmed those claims.

And Meghan may not be the only one uneasy about a royal homecoming.

Prince William is reportedly furious over the prospect of his younger brother returning to Britain after years of tension between the two men.

Harry’s relationship with William deteriorated sharply after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the U.K. for North America in 2020. It became even more strained after Harry publicly aired grievances involving William, Kate Middleton, King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggested Harry’s return could force the brothers into closer contact whether William likes it or not.

“In the long term, the return of the Sussexes to the U.K. opens up the prospect of two rival courts, William’s and Harry’s,” Hunt said.

He added that Harry being back in Britain could allow him to rebuild his relationship with King Charles while making it increasingly difficult for William to avoid his brother.

“The surprise return of Harry and Meghan is likely to have left William apoplectic,” Hunt claimed.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the timing could also be crucial.

He suggested Harry and Meghan may prefer to make any move while King Charles is still on the throne, fearing their options could become more limited once William becomes king.

“This is actually an extremely serious situation,” Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail.

“What they have done is very clearly chosen King Charles’s reign to do this, knowing their options might be very limited when, and if, William becomes king,” he said.

Fitzwilliams went even further, speculating that William could someday scrutinize the Sussexes’ royal titles — and possibly those of their children.

For now, however, Meghan’s reported six-month arrangement appears to give her exactly what she wants: a chance to see whether Britain can feel like home again without completely shutting the door on her California life.

And if the royal reunion goes badly, Montecito could be waiting.
