Prince William is reportedly seeing red over Prince Harry’s latest attempt to define his place in the Royal Family — with insiders claiming the future king believes his younger brother is acting like a working royal whenever it suits him.
The fresh tension comes after Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 45, returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, on Aug. 26, six years after dramatically walking away from royal duties and beginning a new life in North America.
Despite moving back to the U.K., Harry and Meghan remain private citizens and are not working members of the monarchy.
That distinction is now reportedly at the center of another bitter dispute between the once-close brothers.
During a recent visit to Ukraine, Harry pushed back on the idea that he is simply a “non-working royal.”
“I will always be part of the Royal Family, and I’m here working and doing the very thing that I was born to do,” Harry said. “And I enjoy doing it.”
According to royal sources, those words did not sit well with William, 44.
One insider claimed William is “fuming” because he believes Harry is creating the impression that he can pick and choose when to behave like an official representative of the Crown.
“Harry remains the King’s son, and nobody can take that away from him, but being a member of the family and representing the monarchy are two very different things,” the source said.
The insider claimed William believes the agreement reached when Harry and Meghan stepped away in 2020 could not have been clearer.
The Sussexes wanted their independence, the source said, but that independence came with giving up their positions as working royals.
Now, William is reportedly frustrated to see Harry making high-profile trips, speaking about carrying out the work he was “born to do” and potentially creating what the prince sees as a rival or “parallel” royal operation.
Harry and Meghan’s move back to Britain has only made the issue more sensitive.
William reportedly wants there to be absolutely no confusion over who officially represents King Charles III and who does not.
Harry, however, apparently sees the situation very differently.
Sources said the Duke of Sussex believes stepping away from official palace duties never stopped him from being a prince or devoting himself to causes he has supported for much of his life.
From Harry’s point of view, he is not pretending to be a working royal. He believes he is simply continuing a lifetime of public service on his own terms.
That explanation may not calm William.
The Prince of Wales is reportedly worried that Harry’s activities could begin resembling the controversial “half-in, half-out” royal arrangement Harry and Meghan originally wanted when they left Britain.
Queen Elizabeth II rejected that proposal in 2020.
Under the Sussexes’ preferred arrangement, they hoped to gain greater financial and personal independence while still carrying out some duties on behalf of the monarchy.
The palace ultimately decided that arrangement would not work.
Years later, the scars from the royal breakup remain.
Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles, 77, has recently shown signs of thawing. Charles reportedly spent time with Archie and Lilibet at Highgrove this summer before the Sussexes announced their return to Britain.
William’s relationship with Harry appears far harder to repair.
Harry unleashed a series of damaging accusations involving his brother in his explosive 2023 memoir, Spare.
Among them, Harry claimed William raised concerns about Meghan before their 2018 wedding and became involved in arguments ranging from Harry’s decision to keep his beard for the ceremony to far more serious family disputes.
Harry also alleged William physically attacked him during an argument over Meghan, knocking him to the floor.
The brothers’ feud had already been playing out publicly before Spare.
Harry and Meghan made explosive claims about royal life during their blockbuster 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, followed by additional accusations in their 2022 Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan.
William later publicly pushed back against claims of racism inside the monarchy, declaring: “We’re very much not a racist family.”
Despite all the bad blood, Harry has repeatedly said he wants peace.
After losing his U.K. security appeal in 2025, he said he hoped to reconcile with his family.
“I would love reconciliation with my family,” Harry said. “There’s no point continuing to fight any more; life is precious.”
But moving back to Britain has not suddenly restored Harry and Meghan’s royal positions.
The couple is expected to live outside London while Archie and Lilibet attend school in Britain. Harry and Meghan are also expected to continue pursuing their own business ventures, charitable projects and professional interests rather than carrying out engagements for the King.
Meghan has even been linked to a possible return to acting, with reports claiming she has discussed appearing in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen.
For William and Princess Catherine, 44, however, Harry and Meghan’s return means the estranged couples are once again living much closer to one another.
Whether that brings the warring brothers closer together remains another question entirely.
For now, there has been no announcement that Harry is returning to official royal duties — and the arrangement put in place after the Sussexes walked away in 2020 remains intact.
