Tom Cruise is reportedly reeling after his daughter Suri made a major personal change official by legally dropping his famous last name.
The 20-year-old Carnegie Mellon University student is now reportedly using the legal name Suri Noelle, replacing Cruise with her mother Katie Holmes’ middle name. The move marks another emotional turn in the long-distance relationship between the Hollywood superstar and the daughter he shares with Holmes.
Suri, who was born in 2006 during Cruise and Holmes’ high-profile marriage, is said to have registered to vote in Pennsylvania under the name Suri Noelle after moving there for college. Because Pennsylvania requires voters to register under their legal names, the registration has been viewed as confirmation that the name change is now official.
The decision comes after Suri publicly used the name Noelle in her high school graduation program in New York in June 2024, sparking speculation at the time that she was quietly distancing herself from her father’s surname.
A source close to the family claimed Cruise has been deeply hurt by the development.
“Tom is deeply saddened by this development,” the insider said. “While he understands Suri is an adult making her own decisions, seeing his surname disappear from her legal identity has been incredibly painful for him. He never imagined things would reach this point.”
The source added that those close to the Mission: Impossible star view the move as an emotional blow rather than a legal one.
“He still cares enormously about Suri and hopes that, one day, there will be an opportunity to rebuild their relationship,” the insider continued. “Right now, though, friends say he feels heartbroken and devastated by what this represents.”
Suri’s reported choice of Noelle is said to be both a tribute to Holmes and a way for the college student to begin a new chapter outside the shadow of her famous parents. The name change may also help her establish a more private identity as she studies away from New York, where Holmes raised her following the former couple’s 2012 divorce.
Holmes has rarely discussed Suri’s personal life publicly, but she has spoken warmly about watching her daughter head off to college.
“I’m proud of my daughter,” Holmes told Town & Country. “Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her, and I’m happy.”
The Dawson’s Creek alum added, “I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”
Cruise and Holmes married in 2006, the same year Suri was born. Holmes filed for divorce six years later, and after the split was finalized, she was widely believed to have had primary custody of Suri throughout her childhood.
Since enrolling at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, Suri has maintained a low profile while focusing on her studies. Her reported legal name change follows her earlier use of Noelle at graduation, suggesting the decision had been in motion before she left New York for college.
Neither Cruise nor Holmes has publicly commented on the reports, and Suri has not addressed the matter herself.
Cruise remains one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, with blockbuster franchises including Top Gun and Mission: Impossible. The four-time Oscar nominee and three-time Golden Globe winner has spent decades dominating the box office, but sources claim this deeply personal family development has left him shaken behind the scenes.
