A relaxing weekend getaway aboard the MSC Virtuosa took a deadly turn when a 60-year-old man was killed just hours after the cruise ship set sail from Southampton, England.

The two-night cruise to Bruges was only getting started Saturday evening when, around 8:30 p.m., a violent altercation broke out on board. The man, believed to be part of a group of around 20 passengers, was pronounced dead at the scene. British authorities have since launched a full-blown murder investigation.

A 57-year-old man from Exeter, reportedly a friend of the victim, was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Passengers aboard the luxury liner described the trip as a “booze cruise,” and multiple reports suggest alcohol may have played a role in the deadly dispute.

The victim’s body remained onboard the ship as it continued its voyage, only being removed once the MSC Virtuosa docked back at Southampton’s Horizon Terminal Monday morning. A large police presence met the ship at port as the investigation ramped up.

One witness told MailOnline that family members of the deceased—reportedly including his two daughters and son—arrived at the docks and tried to gain access to the vessel to see the body. The family, believed to live in the Southampton area, was visibly distraught and demanded answers.

According to maritime law, large cruise ships like the MSC Virtuosa are equipped with onboard morgues, usually able to hold between three to six bodies.

In a statement, Hampshire Police confirmed that the homicide investigation is ongoing and described the incident as isolated. “We want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance,” said Det. Chief Insp. Matt Gillooly, the lead investigator. He also urged anyone on the cruise with relevant information to contact Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

The MSC Virtuosa, a massive luxury cruise ship operated by MSC Cruises, had just departed on a short round-trip voyage when tragedy struck. The company released a statement saying, “Following an incident on board our ship, the relevant authorities were contacted, and we are cooperating fully with their investigations. We are providing full support to those impacted.”

While details surrounding the fatal fight remain under investigation, the shocking death has left passengers and crew shaken—and cast a grim shadow over what was supposed to be a carefree escape.
