Shoppers in Omaha were left stunned Tuesday morning after a terrifying scene unfolded inside a Walmart, where a woman allegedly snatched a toddler and slashed him in the face before police opened fire and killed her.
According to authorities, the chaos erupted around 9:15 a.m. at a Walmart near South 72nd Street and Pine. Omaha Deputy Police Chief Scott Gray said the incident began as a suspected kidnapping when the woman—who was not known to the child’s family—grabbed the 3-year-old boy from his caregiver inside the store.
Panic quickly spread as a frantic 911 call brought officers rushing to the scene. But before police could fully intervene, the situation took a horrifying turn.
Investigators say the woman pulled out a knife and slashed the young boy across the face, leaving him bleeding as terrified witnesses looked on. Video captured at the scene reportedly showed the child with blood on his face in the immediate aftermath.
Officers confronted the suspect outside the store and issued multiple commands, but the situation escalated within seconds. Police then opened fire, killing the woman at the scene. Authorities have not yet released her identity or said how many shots were fired.
The injured toddler was rushed to a nearby hospital with a facial laceration. His current condition has not been disclosed.
Police confirmed no officers were injured and described the incident as isolated, saying there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Walmart issued a statement condemning the violence, calling it “unacceptable” and confirming the company is cooperating fully with investigators.
Authorities are now combing through surveillance footage, body camera video, and witness accounts to piece together exactly what led to the shocking attack that turned an ordinary shopping trip into a nightmare.
