It’s a goodbye that still haunts him.
Conan O’Brien is opening up about the devastating final moments he shared with longtime friend Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner — just hours before the couple were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home.
The late-night legend, 62, revealed he was among the last people to see the couple alive after they attended his Christmas party on December 13, 2025. The next morning, the unimaginable happened.
“I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward,” O’Brien said in a February 20 interview. “There’s no other word for it. It’s just so awful.”
According to reports, the couple had left O’Brien’s holiday gathering following a tense confrontation between Rob and their son, Nick. Partygoers allegedly witnessed a heated argument that left guests unsettled.
The following day, Rob and Michele were discovered slain in their bedroom. Their son Nick, 32, was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances. He remains behind bars without bail. Authorities have said he had previously been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and struggled with substance abuse.
For O’Brien, the loss is still difficult to process.
“To say good night to somebody and then find out the next day that they’re gone… it’s hard for me to comprehend,” he said.
Beyond the horror of how they died, O’Brien reflected on the larger-than-life legacy his friend leaves behind.
Reiner’s directing résumé reads like a greatest-hits list of Hollywood classics, including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride and Stand by Me.
“If you can make one great movie, that’s impressive,” O’Brien said. “To make two means you’re one of the greats. To make seven in about a decade? That’s insanity.”
He also noted how deeply engaged Reiner was in political and social causes, often speaking out passionately about the direction of the country.
“To have that voice go quiet in an instant,” O’Brien added, “is still hard for me to comprehend.”
Sources claim that before leaving the party, a shaken Rob confided to friends that he feared his son could hurt him — words that now feel chilling in hindsight.
As Hollywood continues to reel, O’Brien’s raw grief underscores just how sudden — and senseless — the loss feels.
For those who grew up watching Reiner’s films or admired his outspoken activism, the tragedy isn’t just personal. It’s the silencing of a cultural force — and a reminder of how quickly everything can change.
