Elizabeth Smart Says Nancy Guthrie Could Still Be Alive

Elizabeth Smart is urging the public not to give up hope in the heartbreaking search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, even as the case stretches past the five-month mark with few public answers.

Smart, who survived one of the most infamous kidnapping cases in modern America, said the absence of a body or definitive proof of death means people should not assume the worst.

“I would remind people that we don’t know all the details,” Smart told E! News. “There is still reason to have hope that she is alive.”

Nancy, 84, vanished from her home in Arizona’s Catalina Foothills on January 31, setting off a sprawling investigation that has drawn in local authorities and the FBI. Her family became alarmed when she failed to show up for church the next morning, and investigators have said they believe she was taken from her home against her will.

The case quickly grew even more chilling after authorities reviewed surveillance footage that appeared to show a masked person tampering with a security camera outside Nancy’s home around the time she disappeared.

For Savannah Guthrie and her family, the silence has been agonizing. Months have passed without Nancy being found, no suspect has been publicly named, and the investigation has been clouded by disturbing alleged ransom communications that raised new questions about what may have happened.

Interest in the case surged again after portions of alleged ransom notes were discussed on the Crime Junkie podcast. One message was reportedly addressed directly to Savannah and began with the chilling line, “Hello Savannah. We have your mother, Nancy.”

The note allegedly claimed Nancy was “safe but scared” and demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her release. Another message later surfaced claiming Nancy had died shortly after she was abducted.

However, investigators have treated the notes with caution, and law enforcement sources have reportedly questioned whether some of the communications were legitimate. The uncertainty has only deepened the mystery surrounding Nancy’s disappearance.

Smart said that while the case is painful and frightening, people should resist the urge to jump to conclusions before investigators have all the answers.

“There is still reason to have hope that she is alive,” she said, adding that Nancy’s remains have not been recovered.

Smart also said she hopes authorities know more behind the scenes than they have been able to publicly reveal.

“We shouldn’t give up until we find her,” she said.

The 36-year-old advocate also urged the public to show compassion for Savannah and the entire Guthrie family as they continue living through a nightmare with no clear ending.

“We should have all the compassion and grace for the entire Guthrie family,” Smart said.

For now, the search remains active, and Nancy’s loved ones continue waiting for the one answer they need most: where she is.
