A tense Long Island high school basketball game spiraled into chaos when a fight on the court allegedly drew a 36-year-old spectator into the fray — and left a 15-year-old player hurt.

The incident unfolded in the final minute of a matchup between Half Hollow Hills West High School and Comsewogue High School, when players from both teams began pushing and shoving near midcourt. With referees trying to regain control, more players rushed in, turning the scuffle into a bench-clearing brawl.

According to authorities, a man later identified as Jeffery Vernot, 36, ran out of the stands and allegedly struck a 15-year-old Comsewogue player during the melee. Video aired by News 12 Long Island appears to show the teen stumbling afterward, seemingly in pain, as coaches, security, and other spectators rushed toward the scene.

The fight broke out with just 44 seconds remaining in the game and Half Hollow Hills West leading 63–52. After several minutes of confusion and cleanup, both teams were escorted out of the gym and the game was not completed, Newsday reported.

Vernot has been charged with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 30.

Both school districts released statements condemning the violence. The Comsewogue School District said it was “deeply disappointed” by the incident, while the Half Hollow Hills Central School District said it “condemns violence” and is fully cooperating with the investigation by Suffolk County Police Department.

Superintendent John O’Farrell added that the district remains committed to putting safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Section XI officials also announced that individuals who violated league policy by fighting or leaving the bench will be suspended for two games.

  1. Child abuse, assault and battery, disorderly conduct, and other charges should be brought on this guy. Ban him from public events for 20 years. Jail or prison first. I hope the kid is ok. Hope he isn’t going to stop playing sports because of an idiot adult. Need to protect our children at all times. We are a small community but our Police and Ambulance with EMT’s are at every sporting event. Might be something to think about. Those who are trouble makers are escorted out ASAP with another officer making sure he leaves and doesn’t return.
