Former Lakers star and NBA coach Byron Scott is facing serious allegations in a newly filed lawsuit that accuses him of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a janitor’s closet during the height of his playing career.
The alleged incident took place in the summer of 1987 at Campbell Hall, a prestigious private school in Los Angeles, while Scott was filming a basketball instructional video with the Lakers. The plaintiff, Hayley Dylan—who has chosen to publicly reveal her identity—claims Scott, then 26 and married, lured her into an isolated part of the gym, forced himself on her, and attempted to make her perform oral sex.
Now 53, Dylan is suing Scott for sexual battery, false imprisonment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She is also suing Campbell Hall School, claiming the staff failed to protect her despite knowingly leaving her alone with an adult man. According to the suit, school officials were more interested in securing autographs from the Lakers than ensuring student safety.
Scott has admitted through his attorney that a sexual encounter occurred but insists he believed Dylan was 18 at the time. His attorney said the accusations “blindsided” him and his family, calling it “a devastating complaint.”
Court documents describe in disturbing detail how Scott allegedly groomed Dylan during the event—first by inviting her to lunch, then isolating her from the rest of the group, before pulling her into a janitor’s closet and assaulting her. The lawsuit claims Dylan was terrified and repeatedly told him to stop.
Afterward, Scott allegedly gave her Lakers merchandise and tried to convince her not to tell anyone. According to the complaint, when another Lakers player was asked to give Dylan a ride home, he refused, saying, “F*** no. I’m not putting that girl in my car.” She ended up using a payphone to call her mother.
Though the alleged assault occurred decades ago, Dylan says she chose to come forward now under California’s Child Victims Act, which extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The law went into effect in 2020 and opened the door for long-suppressed cases like hers to be heard in court.
At the time of the incident, Scott was a key figure in the Lakers’ legendary “Showtime” era. He won three NBA championships and later went on to coach several NBA teams, including a head coaching stint with the Lakers from 2014 to 2016. He is now married to reality star CeCe Gutierrez and lives in a $2.4 million home in Los Angeles.
The suit also calls out Campbell Hall—a $54,000-a-year private school attended by Hollywood families—for failing to implement even basic safeguards. Famous alumni of the school include Elle and Dakota Fanning, the Olsen sisters, Ariel Winter, and John David Washington.
Dylan is seeking a jury trial and damages exceeding $25,000 for the long-lasting psychological trauma she says she continues to suffer. Neither Scott nor Campbell Hall School has offered additional public comment.
