It turns out Prince Philip had serious reservations about Meghan Markle long before the royal wedding bells rang. The late Duke of Edinburgh, known for his sharp tongue and traditional views, reportedly cautioned his grandson Prince Harry not to rush into marrying the former Suits star — and even gave her a stinging nickname behind palace doors.

According to royal insiders, Philip bluntly told Harry, “One steps out with actresses, one doesn’t marry them.” Biographer Andrew Lownie reveals in his explosive book Entitled that Philip was “reluctant” to be charmed by Meghan, wary of her Hollywood background and the couple’s whirlwind 16-month romance.

Royal author Ingrid Seward echoed those doubts in My Mother and I, describing Philip as “one of the very few” in the family who resisted Meghan’s charm offensive. Seward claims Philip found Markle “uncanny” in her resemblance to Wallis Simpson — the American divorcee who caused King Edward VIII to abdicate. The Duke even nicknamed Meghan “D.O.W.” — short for Duchess of Windsor.

Prince William reportedly shared his grandfather’s unease. In Harry’s memoir Spare, he admitted William had told him their relationship was moving “too fast, too soon.” But Harry pushed forward, convinced time was short — with one royal source claiming he was mindful of Meghan’s “biological clock” as she neared 35.

Their 2018 wedding may have looked like a fairy tale, but insiders say the cracks appeared almost immediately. Meghan soon realized royal life wasn’t the glamorous dream she’d imagined — and within two years, the couple shocked the world by stepping back from royal duties in what became known as Megxit.

After Harry and Meghan’s move to North America, Philip’s frustration reportedly deepened. Seward said the Duke couldn’t grasp why Meghan refused to follow his own example of sacrifice.

“He gave up his naval career and identity to serve the Queen and the Crown,” Seward told The Sun. “He couldn’t understand why Meghan couldn’t do the same for Harry.”

Having renounced his citizenship, his name, and his independence when he married Queen Elizabeth, Philip believed duty should always come first. “Why couldn’t Meghan just give up acting, support her husband, and strengthen the monarchy?” Seward said of Philip’s thoughts.

Even years after Philip’s death in 2021, his warning seems eerily prophetic. The Sussexes’ royal exit continues to divide the family and the public alike — and the late Duke’s words, once dismissed as old-fashioned, now sound more like a royal premonition.
