Prince Andrew just can’t catch a break. The disgraced royal—stripped of his titles, honors, and reputation—is now reportedly facing a new royal embarrassment: a hyphen.
According to The Times, Buckingham Palace is reconsidering how to officially style Andrew’s name and may soon rebrand him as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, in line with Queen Elizabeth II’s 1960 decree. That tiny dash could mark yet another reminder of just how far the Queen’s once-favorite son has fallen.
For context, Elizabeth II declared that descendants without royal titles or HRH status should bear the family name “Mountbatten-Windsor,” a nod to her husband Prince Philip’s lineage. Back in the day, Philip famously complained that not passing down his name made him feel like “nothing but a bloody amoeba.”
So technically, Andrew should’ve been a Mountbatten-Windsor all along. But after losing his royal perks over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein—and being banned from wearing his naval uniform at the Queen’s funeral—it seems the Palace is ready to make that hyphen official.
Royal historian Ian Lloyd called it “surprising” that the Palace ever dropped the hyphen, given Her Majesty’s exact words. But royal watchers say this small punctuation mark feels like poetic justice: the once high-flying Duke of York reduced to the quiet confines of a surname correction.
Even among the royals, punctuation has always been political. Princess Anne, Archie Harrison, and countless other Windsors got their official hyphen. But Andrew Parker Bowles, Helena Bonham Carter, and Andrew Lloyd Webber skipped it—and no one complained.
For Andrew, though, it’s not just about grammar—it’s about symbolism. A hyphen doesn’t sting like losing your HRH, but it’s one more subtle way for the Palace to remind the world that Andrew, the ex-Prince, is no longer one of them.
TL;DR: Prince Andrew’s name is about to get a hyphen—and it’s shaping up to be his latest royal humiliation. Sometimes, it really is all about the dash.
