A peaceful dinner rush turned into an unforgettable scene of chaos when a massive fish tank suddenly burst inside a Chinese restaurant — sending hundreds of live fish flopping and swimming across the floor.

The bizarre incident happened last Wednesday at a popular stone-pot seafood restaurant in the bustling city of Fuzhou, located in China’s southeastern Fujian Province.

According to local reports, the tank — a newly installed showpiece meant to display the restaurant’s freshest catches — ruptured without warning. Witnesses said a loud crack echoed through the dining room before a wave of water exploded from the glass enclosure.

“I heard what sounded like thunder, and then water was everywhere,” one diner told the Fujian Daily. “Fish were flying out — some landed on tables, others were swimming between people’s feet. It was like an aquarium had come alive.”

Security footage quickly spread online, showing stunned customers screaming and jumping from their seats as water rushed across the restaurant floor. Staff members, caught completely off guard, scrambled to scoop up wriggling fish while others tried to prevent more damage.

Social media in China lit up with puns and laughter over the clip. One Weibo user joked, “Now that’s what I call fresh seafood!” Another quipped that the restaurant’s “service was so fast, the fish swam right to your table.”

The restaurant’s owner, who asked not to be named, said the tank had been installed just two weeks earlier by a local contractor. “We still don’t know what caused it — maybe a pressure issue,” the owner told reporters. “The most important thing is that nobody was hurt.”

The damage from the flood hasn’t been fully assessed, but the restaurant’s quick-thinking owner reportedly offered all customers free meals that evening as an apology for the fishy fiasco.

Experts say accidents involving large aquariums are rare but not unheard of. In 2022, Berlin’s Radisson Blu hotel made international headlines when its 50-foot-tall aquarium exploded, injuring two people and killing over a thousand tropical fish.

As for the Fuzhou restaurant, the owner insists business will continue — minus the giant fish tank. “We’ll stick to serving fish,” the owner said with a sigh. “But next time, they’ll stay in the kitchen.”

  1. The contractor is definitely at fault. He should be responsible for damages and made to refund the owner.
