A terrifying accident at a busy train station left a 12-year-old boy fighting for his life after his school backpack reportedly became trapped on a moving train — dragging him underneath the massive passenger car in front of horrified classmates.
The shocking incident unfolded Monday afternoon at North Melbourne railway station in Australia, where the seventh grader from St Aloysius College was standing near the edge of the platform as a train pulled in around 4 p.m.
According to school officials, the boy’s backpack somehow got caught on the train just as it arrived, causing him to lose his footing and tumble onto the tracks.
What happened next was every parent’s nightmare.
Witnesses say the child was dragged several yards before becoming pinned underneath the train, where he remained trapped for nearly an hour while stunned commuters and classmates watched emergency crews race to save him.
Some of the boy’s classmates reportedly sprang into action immediately, with one student hitting the emergency button and calling Australia’s emergency line, while others alerted transit workers.
Firefighters eventually used a hydraulic jack to lift part of the train high enough to reach the injured student underneath.
Once rescued, the boy was rushed to Royal Children’s Hospital in critical condition with serious leg injuries.
Doctors later said the student was in “serious but stable” condition as of Tuesday morning.
In a message sent to parents, school principal Mary Farah said the entire school community was shaken by the traumatic incident.
“As of this morning, the student remains under medical care,” she reportedly wrote. “The college’s thoughts, prayers and support are with the student and their family.”
The principal also revealed that several children witnessed the horrifying scene unfold in real time, prompting the school to offer counseling and wellbeing support to affected students.
Meanwhile, Metro Trains confirmed it has launched an investigation into the frightening accident and thanked emergency crews for their rapid response.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about safety at crowded train platforms, especially during busy after-school hours.
