A respected fisherman has vanished after his line became entangled with a massive mako shark off Newcastle, Australia.
Paul Barning, 58, was competing in a game fishing tournament on Sunday, Feb. 23. While battling the elements, his line caught on a large mako shark. The creature reportedly submerged, dragging him overboard.
NSW Police Superintendent Joe McNulty stated, “After the entanglement, we believe the shark submerged, dragging him into the water.”
He added, “During the process of bringing the shark alongside, his line went taut and may have caused him to go over the side.”
Key Details
- The boat was just 6.8 meters long.
- Barning was not wearing a life jacket—a critical safety measure.
- There is no evidence the shark attacked him deliberately.
- Mako sharks in the area weigh between 60 and 140 kilograms.
Barning was a pillar of his community. As secretary, past president, and life member of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club, he was well-known for his expertise and dedication. His sudden disappearance leaves a void felt deeply by family, friends, and fellow anglers.
