George Clooney is known for his charm, his wit, and that signature smirk — but the Hollywood icon just got real about his wilder years.

In a new interview with Esquire for its November 2025 issue, the 64-year-old actor admitted he experimented with drugs back in the 1980s, when he was still hustling for roles in Hollywood.

“Eighty-two, I tried — I did blow and stuff,” Clooney confessed. “I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all.”

The Ocean’s Eleven star said cocaine was practically normalized back then, even in pop culture. “There was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow,” he recalled. “At the time, it was like, ‘No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive.’ But then it was like, ‘Oh, well, it’s actually pretty f—king bad.’”

He even joked about the poor quality of what was being sold. “It was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a s—t,” he said with a laugh.

When it came to weed, though, Clooney said it just wasn’t his thing. He remembered one particularly disastrous night involving pot brownies, The Wizard of Oz, and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.

“We were f—ked,” he said. “There was like 20 of us in the screening room, and the movie ended, and we sat there without speaking for hours. Like the sun was coming up. It’s just not my drug.”

The Oscar-winning actor also talked about his complicated relationship with alcohol. While he said he never had a serious drinking problem, there were times when he’d “get pretty toasty every night.”

“I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem — I never woke up and drank or anything,” he told Esquire. “But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”

Recently, Clooney went sober during his three-month Broadway run, breaking the streak only for “the odd glass of wine on some Sundays.” But when the Tony Awards came around in June, he admitted he made up for lost time.

“I got blasted,” he laughed. “Barely walking drunk, you know? I came home with Amal, and I was just laughing. We’re lying in bed, and I go, ‘Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night.’ I was sick all day the next day; it was hysterical. I was like high school drunk. Like dumbass drunk.”

Now a father of two and one of Hollywood’s most respected figures, Clooney seems to be looking back on his past with humor and gratitude — proving that even the world’s suavest man had his wild days.
