Tina Turner’s hometown of Brownsville, Tennessee thought it was honoring the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll with a 10-foot bronze statue. Instead, fans are calling it a disaster.
The statue, unveiled over the weekend as part of the town’s Tina Turner Heritage Days, was funded by 50 donors, including one person who put in $150,000. Sculptor Fred Ajanogha said he tried to capture Turner’s trademark stage presence — her wild hair, her pointed finger holding the mic, and her fierce dance stance. He even described her hair as the “mane of a lion.”
But once the statue was revealed, social media exploded with outrage. Fans said Turner’s face looks off, her hair is over-the-top, and the whole thing just doesn’t do justice to her iconic beauty.
“That Tina Turner statue pisses me off SO BAD,” one person fumed on X.
“That statue is a tragedy. She deserves better,” another wrote.
One fan even joked that it looked like “a damn Elden Ring boss.”
Some comments were less forgiving: “This statue is atrocious… thank god Tina passed before this thing was erected. She couldn’t take any more trauma.”
Despite the backlash, Brownsville officials insist the piece is “a stunning tribute” to Turner’s life and legacy, saying it represents her “dynamic energy and legendary style.” The monument now stands proudly next to her old high school.
Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock in nearby Nutbush, went on to conquer the world with hits like “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” winning eight Grammys before her death in 2023 at age 83. For her hometown, the statue was meant to be a permanent reminder of her rise from small-town girl to global superstar.
For fans, though, it’s proof that even legends can get let down in bronze.
