A quiet Saturday morning in Madisonville, Tennessee, erupted into chaos when a 71-year-old woman was mauled by a pack of dogs in what authorities are calling one of the most vicious attacks they’ve ever seen.

On September 6, deputies responding to a 911 call found Mary Norwood lying on the front porch of a home on Fairview Road. She was bleeding heavily, suffering from “severe lacerations” across her body. Investigators say she had been attacked by as many as 10 to 15 pit bull mixes.

Neighbors and bystanders risked their own safety to pull the dogs off Norwood. “Nobody could’ve gotten those dogs off themselves,” said Sue Pettingill, public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “There were just too many of them. I’ve seen dog attacks before, but never anything like this.”

Norwood was rushed to the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville. Her current condition has not been made public.

The horrifying attack triggered a sweeping investigation. Four people were arrested:

  • Clayton Warren Davis, 65
  • Sara June Burris, 44
  • Ricky Lee Burris, 57
  • Sheila Jenene Kryzak, 54

Each faces felony charges of animals at large causing serious injury, along with multiple counts of animal cruelty and violations for failing to vaccinate dogs against rabies.

Authorities say animal control removed 27 dogs from the property — 13 adults, 13 puppies, and one belonging to the victim.

The suspects’ legal troubles run deep. Officials revealed that Ricky Lee Burris, already on medical furlough, may face additional charges for owning a “vicious dog” as a convicted felon and failing to register as a sex offender. Sara June Burris was also slapped with drug-related charges after contraband was allegedly discovered in her possession.

Sheriff’s officials confirmed this was not the first time dogs had been taken from the suspects’ property, though it was the first time someone was seriously injured. “This was a very, very vicious attack. She was vulnerable and helpless in that situation,” Pettingill said.

The Tennessee case echoes a string of deadly dog maulings across the U.S. in recent years. In April, a 17-year-old girl in California was fatally attacked while visiting a friend’s house. Months earlier, a 7-year-old boy in Oklahoma was killed by nine dogs that were later euthanized.

Animal advocates warn that irresponsible ownership and lack of enforcement are fueling these tragedies. “It’s preventable,” one local rescue worker told reporters. “These dogs should never have been allowed to roam free.”

As Norwood fights for her recovery, prosecutors are preparing what could be a lengthy court battle. The seized dogs remain in the custody of Monroe County Animal Control.

“This community is shaken,” Pettingill said. “We’ve never seen anything like it. And people need to know — this didn’t have to happen.”

  1. All those fog owners need to be arrested, fined, and their animals removed from their possession! If you can’t be responsible with your dogs, YOU DO NOT GET TO OWN THEM…period!

Many Prayers for the older lady that was ruthlessly attacked by those LOSER’s free roaming dogs!!!
