A tragic day at a Mississippi animal shelter turned into a nightmare after a longtime shelter worker was brutally mauled to death by two dogs with a violent past—dogs that had been rescued from an abuse and dogfighting operation.

On July 18, 57-year-old Clifford Phillips Jr. was performing what should’ve been a routine task at Second Chance Animal Alliance in Yalobusha County. But within moments, that routine became deadly.

According to authorities and eyewitnesses, Phillips was attempting to place one dog into a pen that already held another. The animals—both pit bull and pit mix breeds—turned on him suddenly and savagely.

“He tried to block one with his foot,” said close friend Dudley Woods. “But the dog grabbed his leg and dragged him down. Then the other one pounced. They killed him right there. The security footage caught everything.”

Sheriff Jermain Gooch of Yalobusha County confirmed that the dogs had recently been seized as part of a court-ordered rescue from an underground dogfighting ring. The shelter, a nonprofit, had taken them in with hopes of rehabilitation—but they were clearly not ready.

First responders rushed to the scene, but the dogs were so aggressive that police were forced to shoot one just to reach Phillips’ body. Despite efforts to revive him, Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the dogs, identified as the initial aggressor, was euthanized following the attack. The fate of the second dog remains unclear.

At the time, over a dozen other dogs were housed at the facility. Officials have not stated whether those animals pose any risk or if further actions will be taken.

Phillips had worked at the shelter for two years and was known by colleagues as quiet, gentle, and deeply compassionate. Originally from Wisconsin, he relocated to Water Valley in 2007 with his family. His connection to animals, according to loved ones, ran deep.

“He often said he felt more at ease with animals than people,” his obituary reads. “He found peace among the creatures society too often threw away.”

Phillips is survived by his family, who gathered with friends and neighbors to mourn him at Sylva Rena Baptist Church on July 24.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over the housing and rehabilitation of dogs with violent histories. Critics are demanding stricter safety protocols at rescue shelters, especially those that take in animals from abuse cases.

So far, Second Chance Animal Alliance has remained silent. Repeated requests for comment have gone unanswered.

Sheriff Gooch confirmed that an internal review is underway and the shelter’s operations are under scrutiny.

“There will be hard questions to answer,” Gooch said. “This man lost his life trying to help animals that had already known too much violence. It’s a tragedy all around.”
