A massive anti-Trump protest in downtown Salt Lake City took a terrifying turn Saturday night when gunshots rang out near the Utah State Capitol—leaving one person clinging to life and a suspect in handcuffs.

Authorities confirmed that a gunman opened fire just after 8 p.m. as crowds poured through the streets as part of the “No Kings” demonstration—a nationwide protest movement opposing President Donald Trump’s leadership.

Salt Lake City Police say the shooting happened near 200 South and State Street, along the protest route that began in Pioneer Park. Eyewitnesses reported chaos as marchers screamed and scrambled for safety. Disturbing footage posted to social media shows hundreds running in panic as the sound of gunfire echoed across downtown.

“We can confirm the shooting resulted in one person being critically injured,” the department posted on social media. “The victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.”

Officers swarmed the scene within minutes, guns drawn. A man—reportedly with blood on his hands—was detained by police and is being questioned as a “person of interest.” Fox 13 News journalists on the ground described a dramatic takedown as officers surrounded the suspect.

Police have yet to release his name or motive. They’re urging anyone with video or photos of the attack to come forward.

Roughly 10,000 protesters were in attendance, according to police estimates, marching under banners rejecting President Trump’s administration. But the peaceful protest turned violent in an instant—and officials are now scrambling to restore calm.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the shooting, calling it “a deeply troubling act of violence” and stating plainly, “There is no place for this in our public square.”

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, a vocal Trump critic, called the violence “horrific” and thanked police for their rapid response. “My heart is with you, SLC,” she added.

But critics argue the tone of the protest may have incited the violence. “When you throw gasoline on the fire by demonizing half the country, you shouldn’t be surprised when things explode,” one local resident told a reporter anonymously.

The “No Kings” rally—part of a broader wave of protests challenging Trump’s presidency—had already drawn controversy for inflammatory rhetoric and reported clashes with counter-protesters in cities like Portland and Chicago.

This latest shooting raises serious questions about whether such demonstrations are truly about free speech—or fueling national unrest.

Authorities are continuing to investigate, and the identity of the shooter is expected to be released once charges are filed.

This story is developing.
