A Pennsylvania man once celebrated by President Obama is now behind bars, swept up in President Trump’s latest crackdown on illegal immigration.

Darwin Contreras, 27, who came to America as a child and built a life in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a routine court appearance in June.

Contreras’s story is the new face of America’s fierce immigration debate. He arrived in the U.S. from El Salvador at age 7, fleeing violence and poverty.

Family members say his childhood was marked by trauma—he crossed the border twice, witnessed death on the journey, and spent time in a foster home before reuniting with his mother.

But in America, Contreras quickly excelled. He was a decorated student, earning the President’s Education Award for academic achievement, personally signed by Barack Obama in 2012.

“He was always chasing something better, always trying to inspire those around him,” said his wife, Elizabeth DeJesus, 22. “Even in high school, when things got tough, he pushed himself and his teammates.”

After school, Contreras supported his family and took up track and field, winning MVP honors his senior year. “He dreamed of playing pro soccer, but he put his family first. He started working as soon as he could,” DeJesus told our reporters.

Their American dream seemed within reach. The couple married this spring and both worked at the same restaurant. Contreras, now a father, had begun applying for citizenship.

That dream was shattered June 24. After appearing at a Bethlehem courthouse for a hearing related to a DUI charge and his participation in a rehabilitative program, ICE agents moved in. “They were dressed like any regular guys—just something from Walmart. I had no idea they were ICE,” DeJesus recalled. “They didn’t even tell me where they were taking him. I was terrified.”

Homeland Security officials confirmed Contreras was taken due to his “criminal history,” citing theft and marijuana possession. “This individual admitted he’s in the country illegally. He is a criminal alien,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said.

The arrest comes amid President Trump’s pledge to launch “the largest deportation operation in American history.” The White House has ordered ICE to ramp up courthouse arrests, sparking fear and confusion in immigrant communities nationwide.

Family and supporters say Contreras’s detention has devastated his health. “At first, when he got there, he was not adjusting well, he was not OK. His mental health was not good,” DeJesus said. “This whole system is tearing families apart. He’s been here nearly his whole life. He’s a good man. He deserves a chance.”

As of this writing, Contreras remains at Pike County Correctional Facility, awaiting a hearing that could determine whether he stays in America or is sent back to El Salvador—a country he barely remembers.

Advocates warn this could become the new normal as Trump’s second-term immigration agenda intensifies. “No one is safe,” said one local activist. “If someone with awards from President Obama can be taken, anyone can.”

The White House has not commented on Contreras’s case. But for his wife and child, the American dream is now a daily nightmare.

  1. If he came here as a child, and is now 27, he has had ample time to enter the legal immigration process If he wished to remain here, why did he not just do it and avoid this problem???
