A routine package drop-off turned into a brush with death for one delivery driver in Wayne, New Jersey — and the heart-pounding moment was all caught on a home security camera.

The viral video, captured Monday night during an intense thunderstorm, shows the unnamed driver walking up to the front door of a suburban home. Just as he approaches the steps, a blinding flash and deafening crack of thunder explode behind him — a lightning bolt had struck just feet away.

Startled and clearly shaken, the man drops down, letting out a loud yell as the bolt scorches the ground nearby. The flash nearly blinds the camera before the driver regains his composure. Moments later, a resident opens the door and calmly retrieves the package, seemingly unaware how close both he and the driver came to disaster.

“It sounded like a bomb went off,” said one neighbor who witnessed the aftermath. “That poor guy could’ve been vaporized if he’d been just one step slower.”

The driver, miraculously uninjured, continued on his route — but the terrifying moment serves as a chilling reminder of the hidden risks delivery workers face every day.

“We’re out there in all kinds of weather — rain, snow, extreme heat. But lightning? That’s something else,” said Rico Martinez, a UPS driver based in northern New Jersey. “It’s scary to think how close he came. One more second and we’d be reading a very different headline.”

The National Weather Service reports that more than 20 people are killed by lightning strikes each year in the U.S., with hundreds more injured. Open areas, metal objects, and elevated surfaces all pose added risk — making doorsteps and front porches potential danger zones during storms.

As for the driver in Wayne, his split-second reflexes likely saved his life.

The incident is now making the rounds on social media, where viewers are calling him everything from “lucky” to “a real-life action hero.” One comment summed it up best: “He delivered the package and survived Thor’s wrath. Give that man a raise.”

Officials are urging residents and delivery companies to take extra precautions during severe weather. “If thunder roars, go indoors,” the NWS reminds. “Lightning can strike miles away from the storm.”

The package was delivered. The driver survived. But the skies over Wayne, New Jersey left behind a blazing warning: no job — or doorstep — is ever fully safe when nature strikes.
