Prince Harry may be living in sunny California, but one royal watcher claims the Duke of Sussex is still longing for the life he left behind.
The estranged prince reportedly misses his family, his old role and even the royal “infrastructure” that once surrounded him, according to journalist and former People and Us Weekly editor-in-chief Dan Wakeford.
Appearing on The Royalist podcast Tuesday, Wakeford claimed Harry is struggling with the deep fallout from his royal exit — especially when it comes to his shattered bond with his older brother, Prince William.
“There is a sense of loss with his family that is profound,” Wakeford said, claiming Harry misses being able to do royal work, misses his home, misses his friends and misses the “safety and security” of life inside the palace system.
The stunning comments come as Harry’s feud with William remains one of the most talked-about royal dramas in years.
Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, saying they wanted financial independence from the royal family. But the move only widened the already bitter divide between Harry and William.
Things got even worse after Harry released his explosive 2023 memoir, Spare, where he described William as his “arch-nemesis” and aired painful family grievances that shocked royal watchers around the world.
Now, Wakeford claims Harry may be feeling the weight of that decision.
According to Wakeford, one source close to Harry claimed the duke had quietly hoped William would struggle in his royal role — not out of pure cruelty, but because it might give Harry a way back in.
“The devastating part of this is the quote where the sources have said that he secretly hoped William would struggle so he would pick up the phone and call him back and ask him for help,” Wakeford said.
Wakeford added that Harry had once expected he and William to carry the royal burden together, especially during the days when the brothers and their wives were viewed as the so-called “Fab Four.”
But that dream collapsed years ago.
“I think he just desperately wanted and wants William to need him,” Wakeford said. “And William is thriving, and so he doesn’t need Harry, and that hurts Harry.”
The journalist suggested Harry is watching his brother’s success from a painful place.
“This is a brother who left, watched the person he’s leaving behind thriving, and he quietly hoped that that wouldn’t happen,” Wakeford said. “That’s a very human and natural feeling.”
Wakeford also claimed Harry sees William “blossoming” and had secretly hoped the future king would not adjust so well without him.
“It’s not malice,” Wakeford said. “It’s just where Harry’s head is at. He’s not watching his brother from a place of peace; he’s watching from a place of loss.”
But podcast host Tom Sykes pushed back hard, questioning whether Harry’s alleged feelings could really be described as anything other than resentment.
“How can you say that’s not malice, Dan?” Sykes asked. “It is malice to look at somebody else and hope that they will fail so that they have to call you.”
Sykes accused Harry of repeatedly throwing William “under the bus” over the years and claimed the duke has shown little interest in apologizing for the damage caused by Spare and his public interviews.
Wakeford admitted Harry has made mistakes and said sources have claimed the prince regrets some of what he said about King Charles and William in his memoir and Netflix documentary.
Still, Sykes pointed to one of the most controversial claims from Spare: Harry’s allegation that William and Kate Middleton encouraged him to wear a Nazi uniform to a costume party in 2005.
The scandal caused global outrage at the time and remains one of the darkest episodes of Harry’s public life.
Sykes argued that Harry tried to shift blame while still claiming he had learned from the incident.
Wakeford then read a quote from a source close to Harry that appeared in his Celebrity Intelligence newsletter.
“Harry sees William blossoming and he secretly had hoped that William would have more of a struggle and need him,” the source claimed. “He’s been waiting for the call. That would be his dream come true. He regrets leaving.”
Wakeford said the quote shows Harry may still be searching for a path back into the royal fold.
“The words speak for themselves,” he said. “He would like a path back there. And if William was struggling, that would provide that.”
The Daily Beast reported it reached out to the Sussexes and Kensington Palace for comment.
For now, Harry remains in California with Meghan and their children, while William continues preparing for his future role as king.
But if Wakeford’s claims are true, the prince who once walked away from royal life may now be wondering if the door back home has closed for good.
