Tom Hanks may be one of Hollywood’s most respected and adored stars, but his road to fame was far from easy—and it started with heartbreak at just 5 years old.

The beloved actor grew up in a fractured home after his parents’ 1960 divorce. His mother, Janet, overwhelmed and financially struggling, made the painful decision to leave young Tom and his older siblings behind with their father while she took their youngest brother, Jim. “I felt lonely, abandoned, in the dark,” Hanks once admitted.

Over the next several years, he bounced between homes—ten by the time he was ten—often surrounded by step-siblings and unstable living conditions. “No one was really taking care of me,” he confessed in an emotional interview. “It was the vocabulary of loneliness.”

Despite the chaos, Hanks found an escape through school. His love for reading, art, and drama gave him something to cling to. “It was a good combat for loneliness,” he said. His high school drama teacher remembered how Hanks lingered after rehearsals, clearly in need of a place to feel safe and seen.

In his 2017 book Uncommon Type, Hanks recalled the grim state of their living conditions. “If you scraped the burnt tomato soup off the stove, it would have been like an archaeological dig,” he joked, masking the pain with humor.

Before her death in 2016, his mother reportedly admitted she carried “a great deal of guilt” for leaving her family behind.

And the generational pain didn’t end there. Hanks’ daughter Elizabeth, from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes, revealed her own childhood was riddled with dysfunction, confusion, and instability. In her memoir, The 10, she described their home as neglected and chaotic, with a fridge often empty and a backyard filled with dog waste. She also suspected her mother suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder.

Despite all this, Hanks not only survived—he thrived. But behind the scenes, the pain of his past still lingers.
