A 22-year-old American woman was tragically shot and killed by suspected cartel gunmen in Mexico after her father’s pickup truck was mistaken for that of a rival gang, according to multiple reports.

Isabel Ashanti Gomez was riding with her father, Valentin, in his Ford F-150 when they were ambushed on the Zitácuaro-Aputzio highway in Juárez, a region notorious for cartel activity. The area is believed to be controlled by the ultra-violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

According to authorities, the family encountered a makeshift roadblock—reportedly set up by CJNG members. Instead of stopping, Valentin attempted to speed through the barricade. That decision proved fatal.

Believing the truck belonged to enemy cartel members, gunmen opened fire. Isabel was killed in the hail of bullets. Her father and another passenger, a 26-year-old woman identified only as Danae, were seriously injured in the ambush.

Just hours before her death, Isabel had shared a video dancing with her uncle on social media, smiling and celebrating his birthday. “I hope you keep celebrating many more birthdays. See you later, after I’ve had a shower,” she captioned the video.

Isabel held dual U.S.-Mexico citizenship and frequently visited the region with her family, according to local reports. The shocking killing has sparked outrage both locally and abroad.

The attack remains under investigation as authorities try to determine how the mistake happened—and whether it could have been prevented.
