In a bizarre twist on the campaign trail, voters in Virginia’s 11th District were stunned Tuesday when social media posts appeared to resurrect the late Rep. Gerry Connolly — all to stump for his former chief of staff, James Walkinshaw.

Connolly, a Democrat who passed away unexpectedly in May, had endorsed Walkinshaw shortly before his death. But this week, Connolly’s official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts came alive again — with a call to action: “Early voting starts TODAY in VA-11. Gerry Connolly endorsed James Walkinshaw — let’s honor that legacy and vote for bold leadership that’ll fight for us every day.”

Ghost Endorsements?

The digital messages, featuring a smiling photo of Connolly and Walkinshaw, redirected users to Walkinshaw’s campaign website. While some supporters welcomed the reminder, others were taken aback by what felt like political messaging from beyond the grave.

“It’s eerie,” said Kelly Ramirez, a Fairfax County voter. “I respected Connolly deeply, but I didn’t expect to hear from him again — at least not on Facebook.”

Though Connolly’s support for Walkinshaw was no secret, his campaign accounts had been dormant since his death — until now. In addition to the social media posts, Connolly’s official congressional website has been updated to include the same image and an open letter endorsing Walkinshaw, dated before his passing.

Establishment Favorite in Crowded Field

Walkinshaw, who once served as Connolly’s chief of staff and currently holds a seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is now the presumed front-runner in a crowded June 28 Democratic primary. Backed by a who’s who of Virginia Democrats — including Rep. Don Beyer, former Rep. Jennifer Wexton, and a long list of state legislators — Walkinshaw also benefits from early polling. His internal campaign numbers put him at 41%, far ahead of state Sen. Stella Pekarsky (8%) and Del. Irene Shin (6%).

But not all of Connolly’s political wishes are being honored. In a separate House vote Tuesday, fellow Democrats rejected Connolly’s hand-picked successor for his role as ranking member of the powerful Oversight Committee. Instead, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), a rising star in Democratic leadership, was chosen overwhelmingly.

Déjà Vu from the Digital Afterlife

This isn’t the first time a deceased House Democrat’s social media account has stirred confusion. Earlier this year, Rep. Sylvester Turner’s X account began following reporters and lawmakers — weeks after his death.

The digital resurrection of Connolly’s voice has raised new questions about the ethics of posthumous political messaging. “We need clarity,” said political ethicist Dr. Marla Chang. “Are these posts pre-scheduled, authorized by family, or run by campaign staff using his name? The public deserves transparency.”

As early voting kicks off, Walkinshaw’s campaign seems content to ride the wave of Connolly’s lingering influence — even if it means leaning on a legacy that now speaks from beyond.

  1. I don’t know any democrat who really want’s to help their own people. Only thing they know is anti Trump and hate for America and the working class. Do you know any democrat who aren’t out to achieve power and wealth?
