Gerry Turner, the beloved star of The Golden Bachelor, has revealed a devastating health battle that led to the sudden collapse of his marriage to Theresa Nist.

Fans were stunned earlier this year when the couple, who tied the knot in a lavish January 2024 TV special, announced their separation just three months later. Now, Turner is opening up about the heartbreaking diagnosis that changed everything.

In an emotional interview with People, the 72-year-old disclosed that he was diagnosed with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare and slow-growing bone marrow cancer, in March. The news came after doctors flagged unusual blood markers during a post-surgery check-up for a pickleball injury.

“When the oncologist gave me the news, it felt like my whole world had been turned upside down,” Turner said.

Sharing the diagnosis with Nist was no easier. “It was such a hard conversation,” he admitted. “She was completely shocked. I think we both were. It’s not the kind of thing you expect to deal with so early in a marriage.”

Turner explained how the diagnosis reshaped his priorities, pulling him toward his family and away from the life he and Nist were trying to build. “I wanted my life to feel as normal as possible,” he said. “That meant spending more time with my daughters, my sons-in-law, and my granddaughters. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about Theresa—I did—but the way forward became unclear.”

Their split, he said, wasn’t about blame but about two people facing life’s hardest truths. “When you’re hit with news like this, it forces you to reevaluate everything,” Turner reflected. “What do you want? What’s most important? For me, it was my family and making the most of the time I have left.”

Though their romance didn’t last, Turner had nothing but kind words for his ex. “Theresa is an incredible woman, and I wish her all the happiness in the world. She deserves it.”

Despite the life-altering diagnosis, Turner remains determined to live fully. “I’m going to pack as much fun and adventure into my life as I can,” he said with conviction. “When my time comes, I won’t leave with regrets.”

Fans have rallied around Turner since the revelation. Social media has been flooded with messages of support, with many praising his courage and optimism. “Gerry’s story is heartbreaking but so inspiring,” one fan tweeted.

For Turner, it’s about leaving behind a legacy of resilience. “Life is unpredictable,” he said. “But you’ve got to make the most of every moment. That’s what I’m doing now.”

The Golden Bachelor’s story continues to captivate, but this time, it’s not about finding love—it’s about finding strength.
