A peaceful protest turned into chaos on Friday when a 21-year-old man allegedly accelerated his SUV straight into a crowd of anti-Trump demonstrators in Culpeper, Virginia—just as the “No Kings” rally was winding down.

According to Culpeper Police, Joseph R. Checklick Jr., a local resident, deliberately drove through a group of protesters as they were dispersing through a business parking lot shortly after the event concluded on June 14. The demonstration was part of a nationwide movement opposing what organizers called “authoritarian overreach” on the same day as President Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s official Flag Day celebrations.

“The driver accelerated intentionally,” authorities stated in a release. “One person was struck by the vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.” The victim has not yet been publicly identified.

Police quickly intervened, pulling the suspect over near the scene and taking him into custody. Checklick was charged with reckless driving and remains held without bond at the Culpeper County Jail following a magistrate’s ruling. Investigators say the attack appeared intentional but did not comment on a specific motive.

Eyewitnesses described the moment the SUV lurched forward. “People were shouting, trying to get out of the way,” said attendee Darius Leemond. “It was like he wanted to scare us—or worse.”

‘No Kings’ Protests Draw Millions Nationwide

The Culpeper rally was part of the coast-to-coast “No Kings” demonstrations, which organizers say drew over 5 million Americans to the streets. The movement sharply criticizes the president’s calls for expanded executive power and his glorification of military displays.

The rallies—some festive, some fiery—marked a national rebuke of perceived authoritarianism, aligning symbolically with Trump’s birthday and the Army’s planned parade. “We’re here because democracy is fragile,” said protester Rachel Kim, waving a sign that read ‘Tyrants Fear the People.’

A Chilling Reminder of 2017

The attack in Culpeper instantly drew comparisons to the 2017 tragedy in Charlottesville—less than 70 miles away—where white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at a “Unite the Right” rally, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring dozens more.

Fields was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. That case became a defining moment in America’s modern protest era and cast a long shadow over political demonstrations nationwide.

For many in Culpeper on Friday, the echoes of that horrific day felt disturbingly close. “This could’ve been another Charlottesville,” said activist Marta Reyes. “We’re lucky no one was killed—but it’s clear the threat is still out there.”

Police say the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed as new evidence emerges.
